After a puzzling premiere (one big flashback), "Z Nation" is back on track with "A New Mission". We catch up with the gang after the fallout of season 2. Murphy and his zombie captees (including Dr Melch) make it to shore. Luckily 10K was in the bottom of his boat (and not the exploding Zona submarine). 10K doesnt seem like himself. He's no longer counting when shooting z's. It's later revealed that Murphy bit him in the back of the neck. Murphy's new plan is to create a new society where he rules "Blends" (people that he has bitten). Murphy doesnt plan to help Zona (or anyone else) find a cure.
The rest of Operation Bitemark (Roberta, Doc, Addie) meet up with Hector/eScoprion (who seems much nicer now). They are captured by a group of soldiers from China. Dr Sun Mei is their leader. Like everyone else in this new world, they are looking for Murphy. They give the team back their weapons with a few improvements. Addy's Z-Whacker is now metal and doubles as a stun gun. Bzzzz!
Sun Mei's crew also has some cool gadgets. There's the anti-zombie grenade (AZG). It's a ball with a green laser light that targets anyone nearby and then shoots a nail into their head. Ouch! Where can I get one? We also see a new group called Enders. They are "worse than zombies-- humans with fried brains".
Everyone heads to a supply stash. All of Sun Mei's people are killed (when an AZG is thrown back at them). Will she join Operation Bitemark? Roberta and Murphy have a heated conversation. And it looks like we're back where we started-- Murphy being uncooperative and everyone else trying to use his blood for a cure. "The Man" (whom we met last week) shows up. Yep, he's looking for Murphy too.
Up at the Arctic Citizen Z awakens to find a Inuit woman named Kaya staring at him. In a hilarious exchange she tells Z she kept him from freezing to death by getting naked. Skin to skin contact is the only thing that works dude! It was either Kaya or her nana or uncle. She had listed to Simon's broadcasts. "I'm a huge fan. Not in the Cathy Bates 'Misery' way."
Grade: 4 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). This episode should have been the season premiere IMHO. I loved the zombie ball. "Zombies eating zombies. What madness is this?" And the anti-zombie grenades were way cool. Where can Kaya was super funny. I really hope she becomes a regular addition. Citizen Z could use some company.
