Crazyhead Season 1 Overview: British Chicks Vs Dastardly Demons

"Crazyhead" (a new offering from NetFlix and UK's E4 channel) is the story of two twenty something ladies fighting demons in England. If "Buffy The Vampire Hunter" had a British cousin, it would be "CrazyHead". It's a fun frolic and, with just six episodes at 45 minutes each, a quick watch.

The horror/comedy opens with Raquel and Amy trying to perform an exorcism on Amy's BFF Suzanne to free her of a demon. It unfortunately doesnt go as planned. Have no fear though, MENTAL NOTE Suzanne is harder to kill than she looks.

Where did the demon come from? Apparently there many among us but ordinary people can't see them. Each woman thinks she's crazy (and is seeing a therapist) until she meets the other. The ladies become fast friends because they're basically social outcasts. Fighting demons is a lonely business. They also dont have any special powers other than being a seer. Or, that's what we think to start with.

Thank goodness Raquel has her brother Tyler. Amy has a Jake (a friend who's overtly interested in her but gives off major gay vibes). Amy is instead attracted to Tyler. Jake is still a good sport though since he continues to drive the girls around. The group is hard to miss. There's a canoe on top of Jake's car.

There are some great comedic lines in the show-- many from Raquel. She taunts the demons by threatening them with an "arse pole" (apparently something up the bum is the only way to successfully kill a demon). So many people have been doing it all wrong for so many years. Raquel also claims a dead giveaway is that demons have cold semen. Uh, TMI Raquel! Bring it down a few notches. Raquel says the first step in performing an exorcism is to pee on the possessed person. Since Wikipedia says so, it must be true. Callum and Jake also have a number of great one liners. I also enjoy single mom Mercy. She's very snarky. She tries to strangle Amy with a stuffed anaconda and takes a toy fighter plane to the boob (which she's none too happy about).

The demons are up to their usual-- taking over the world and killing people. I wont give the rest of the story away since it would ruin the adventure. Demons, you better hightail it out of town though if you know what's good for ya.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A very cute comedy/horror series. I enjoyed the actors: Susan Wokoma (as Raquel), Cara Theobold (as Amy) and Tony Curran (as their therapist Callu ). This reminded me of how much I miss Datak Tarr and "Defiance". But I digress.

One of the best parts of "CrazyHead" is the relationship between Amy and Raquel. Two lost souls find each other and as a result have the strength to save the world. I also like the frank way the show discusses sex. I'm no longer a twenty something but I imagine this is how friends talk about such things.

My one complaint about the series is that the finale was a bit anti-climatic. It seemed like they realized they were out of time and had to wrap it up quickly. Oh well. Overall, I still really liked the show. I'm hoping for a season but where else can the story go? If they decide to give it a shot, I'm definitely in.
