Meeting Javier's family explains a lot. Sister Ava gets Javier to attend a family function by telling him their father is dying. Unfortunately dinner doesnt go as planned. Oscar tells everyone in attendance the details of Santino's death. Yes, he still blames Javier for accidentally killing his six year old brother. Oscar even checks into Javier's line of work and tells everyone he's a contract killer. A tearful Ava says Javier can no longer see her or her daughters. Oscar is definitely a monster. It was a terrible tragedy. Javier was only 16 at the time. Oscar also conveniently forgets his own transgressions (which apparently involve Argentine death squads in the 1970s).
While Javier's relationship with his family seems beyond repair, Letty begins to mend hers with mother Estelle. Letty wants to be a good mother to son Jacob but dont have the skills. Estelle drops the restraining order. She let's Letty take Jacob out for short periods of time. Just when things are looking up, enter Jacob's biological father Sean. He's an ex porn star who abused Letty. He's cleaned up his act (I dont believe him) and wants sole custody. With parents like these, poor Jacob doesnt stand a chance.
In the end Letty gets custody by cutting a deal with the FBI for Javier (deep web handle "entrepreneur"). She elicits her parole officer Christian's help. He had previously gotten a high off pulling another con with her. His flirting with Rhonda was hilarious. Let's just say Christian doesnt have a way with the ladies. Personally I have my reservations about Letty getting custody. She is impulsive and makes very bad decisions (like letting her son hang around a contract killer). But of course it's all necessary for the drama of the show.
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5) After a stellar first half, the backend of the season was a bit slower. But I'm not complaining. Michelle Dockery continues to captivate. This role definitely helps her shake any Lady Mary (from "Downton Abbey") typcasting. Juan Diego Botto is also excellent in his role. Those two have smokin' hot chemistry. The supporting cast (especially Lusia Strus as Estelle) helps make the show even more enjoyable.
The Pereira family dinner was another highlight of the series. I really felt for Javier as Oscar crucified him. i was seriously worried someone would die.
