The X-Men Universe Overview

I'm doing a separate entry on the "X-Men" franchise because they are currently owned by 20th Century Fox (instead of Marvel). See my Marvel Cinematic Universe review here Disney's recent offer to purchase all of Fox's entertainment holdings for $52.4 billion will finally reunite the X-Men (and well as Deadpool and the Fantastic Four) with the rest of the MCU.

"X-Men" is the seventh highest grossing film franchise in history. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is #1, "Star Wars" is #2, "Harry Potter" is #3, "James Bond" is $4, and "DC" is # 12.

There have been 10 "X-Men" movies to date (with 3 more on the way):
  • X-Men (2000)- Directed by Bryan Singer
  • X2 (2003)- Directed by Bryan Singer
  • X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)- Directed by Brett Ratner. The end of the original X-Men trilogy.
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)- The first of three character specific Wolverine stories. This prequel takes place in 1979.
  • X-Men: First Class (2011)- This is a prequel set in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  • The Wolverine (2013)- Takes place in 2013. Logan in Japan.
  • X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014)- Directed by Bryan Singer. Mutants vs Sentinels. This movie altered the previous timeline from the first three "X-Men" movies and takes place in 1973.
  • Deadpool (2016)- "Deadpool" is really a standalone but has two X-Men (Colossus and some chick whose name I cant remember). Several jokes are also made about the X-Men.
  • X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)- Directed by Bryan Singer. "Apocalypse" is a sequel to "First Class" and takes place in 1983. In this version of time, mutants were introduced to the world in 1973. Professor X is played by James McAvoy. En Sabah Nur (the first mutant) emerges 5000 years after being buried under rubble in Egypt. His goal is to take over the world (by first destroying all the nukes).
  • Logan (2017)- Set in 2029.
  • Deadpool 2 (2018)- Enter Cable (Josh Brolin).
  • X-Men: The Dark Phoenix (2019)- This Jean Gray centric movie is a redo of "X-Men: The Last Stand" (which is considered by many to be the weakest film in the series).
  • The New Mutants (2019)- Focused on a younger audience.
  • NOTE: "Legion" (NetFlix), "The Gifted" (Fox), and "The Runaways" (CW) do not appear to be part of the X-Men movie timelines.

There are some 100+ X-Men. Major Characters From The Movies Include:
  • Wolverine/ Logan- Hugh Jackman- Without a doubt, Wolverine is the most popular character in the series. He has been alive since the 1800s.
  • Professor X/ Charles Xavier- Originally played by Patrick Stewart and later by James McAvoy. He is the leader of the mutants and runs Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters. Lady Love Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) is back working for the CIA and still has memory loss.
  • Magneto/ Erik Lehnsherr- Originally played by Ian McKellen and later by Michael Fassbender. Sometimes BFF of X-- its complicated. Often a baddie, Magneto forms the Brotherhood of Mutants. He has a reason to be upset though. Magento (pre magnets) was in a concentration camp in WWII. His family was later killed. The dude seriously needs to see a therapist.
  • Mystique/ Raven Darkholme- Originally played by Rebecca Romijin and later by Jennifer Lawrence.
  • Phoenix/ Jean Grey- Originally played by Famke Janssen. Later played by Sophie Turner (of "Game Of Thrones" fame).
  • Rogue/ Marie D'ancanto- Anna Paquin-
  • Beast/ Hank McCoy- Originally played by Kelsey Grammer.
  • Storm/ Ororo Munroe- Originally played by Halle Berry- Later played by Alexandra Shipp.
  • Cyclops/ Scott Summers- Played at first by James Mardsen and later by Ty Sheridan. Has a complicated past with Jean Grey.
  • Nightcrawler/ Kurt Wagner- Originally played by Alan Cummings.
  • Quicksilver/ Peter Maximoff- Evan Peters- LOVE HIM!!! He is the son of Magento.
  • Psylocke/ Betsy Braddock- Played by Mei Melancon and Olivia Munn.
  • Angel/Arcangel/ Warren Kenneth Worthington III- Played by Ben Foster.
  • Sabretooth/ Victor Creed- Originally played by Liev Schrieber. Half brother of Wolverine.
  • Colossus/ Peter Rasputin- Played by David Cudmore. Also appears in "Deadpool".
  • White Queen/ Emma Frost- Played by January Jones.
  • Iceman/ Bobby Drake- Played by Shawn Ashmore.
  • Pyro/ St John Allerdyce- Played by Aaron Sanford.
  • Shadowcat/Kitty Pyrde- Played by Ellen Page.
  • Lady Deathstrike/ Yuriko Oyama- Played by Kelly Hu.
  • Havoc/Alex Summers- Cyclop's brother. Played by Lucas Til.
  • Jubilee/Jubilaton Lee- Played by Lana Candor. All her scenes were apparently cut from "X-Men: Apocalypse".
  • Blob- Poor Blobby hasnt had much to do so far.
  • Caliban- Hasnt had much to do. His main superpower seems to be throwing shade.
  • X-23- DNA clone of Wolverine.
