The Walking Dead Season 8 Review: Boring Even Walkers To Death (And They're Already Dead)

Unfortunately season 8 of "The Walking Dead" has me giving up on the show. I'm sad to say this since I've been a HUGE fan since episode 1. No longer is it "must see" TV for me each Sunday night. There's just too much filler and too little action. Typically something big occurs at the mid season and season finales. Other than that, it's just talk, talk, and more talk.

Case in point: Two seasons lead up to the final battle with Negan and the Saviors. Yet when we get to "Wrath", it's a complete letdown. Where is the "All Out War" we were promised? After everything Negan did, Rick still couldnt bring himself to kill Negan? I'll buy he was trying to honor the memory of Carl. But if you dont kill a person who in no uncertain terms wants to destroy everything you love, he will be back again. Maggie should overthrow Rick and take charge of the group. Rick has lost his mind. Has he forgotten what Negan did to Glenn and Abraham?

The one bright spot during the finale is Eugene FINALLY growing a pair and sabotaging the Savior's ammo (thus winning the battle for Team Rick).

So the million dollar question IS how to fix this mess of a show when even die-hard viewers such as myself are jumping ship? Here's my suggestions (not that anyone cares):

  1. Reduce The Runtime Of Episodes- We dont need episodes that are 82 minutes long. All that does is add extra fluff that doesn't progress the story line. If it cant be said in 60 minutes, dont say it.
  2. Decrease The Number Of Episodes Per Season- We dont need 16 episodes per season. I would settle for 10 good ones instead. Yes, I know this is the kiss of death since advertisers are big money. But you're not going to have a show to advertise on at the rate you're going.
  3. Kill Rick Grimes- Or at least move him to the side as a secondary character. Yes, Rick is the main character but we've exhausted his story line. It's time for some new blood. How bout putting Maggie or Michonne or Carol or Daryl at the forefront?
  4. More Action- Yes, I know "man" is the biggest threat but all this talking each week is just plain irritating.
  5. Too Many Characters- The cast is way too big at this point. Get rid of half of the characters.
  6. Make The Stakes Higher- Yes, the death of Carl was a major surprise (especially given the show's divergence from the comics). However, it feels like the rest of the cast is safe (at least until mid-season breaks or finales). There should be a possibility that anyone could die at any time.
  7. How Bout A Time Jump?- That might do the trick. The show could definitely benefit from some completely new blood. Just remember "TWD" writers, the viewers have to care about the characters...especially if they are required to listen on to them blabber on forever.

Grade: 0 Monsters (out of 5). It pains me to say it, but I cant continue on with "The Walking Dead" any longer. I might check in from time to time to see what Carol, Daryl and a few others are up to. Other than that, I just dont care. At this point "Fear The Walking Dead" is better. Morgan had the right idea to jump ship and head west. I'm right behind ya dude.
