The Order Season 1 Review: If Witches And Werewolves Went To College Together

"The Order" dropped recently on NetFlix. This "NetFlix Original" has 10 episodes total. The show seems to be geared more towards the YA audience. Its the story of Jack Morton who is heading off to school at Belgrave University. But this is not your ordinary college. Instead there are witches, werewolves and all manner of secrets. There's lots of story to chew through with the Hermetic Order Of The Blue Rose (the witches) and The Knights of St Christopher (the werewolves).

We eventually learn the big bad is Edward Coventry. He is Magus (head of the Order) . Ed of course wants to take over the world. Who doesnt? In order to do it the witchy way, he needs several parts of an ancient book and a bunch of other stuff. It's very complicated.

The actors are good. I especially enjoy Katherine Isabelle as second in command Vera Stone. Love her in everything she does! Jewel Straite (of "Firefly" fame) stops by in the duel roles of Rene Marand and her twin sister. She has something called a necrophone that Magus wants. It allows the user to talk to the dead.

The chemistry between Jack and possible love interest Alyssa is good. They're star crossed lovers stuck in different warring factions. There's also various interesting characters amongst the witches and wolves. I'm Team Werewolf myself. The Order can not be trusted. If "The Order" is your thing, make sure you stick around for the twist ending. It definitely opens up possibilities for a season 2 (should there be one).

Grade: 3 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). "The Order" has a few things going for it-- including a good cast and fun (although sometimes convoluted) story lines. I'm always up for shows about witches and werewolves (especially when they're at odds). It's geared more towards a YA audience (which I'm not a part of). I'd personally like to see a more amped up version-- more drama. more battles, and more sexy times. Not sure that will happen given the target demographic. Hopefully "The Order" will return for a season 2 though so we can see what happened with that twist ending.
