American Horror Story Coven Episode 10 Recap: Myrtle Snow, Theremin Playing Career Counselor

"The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks" episode has finally arrived. Some were disappointed since Stevie only appeared briefly. She sang two songs, did a twirl with Misty and then gave her a shawl. What did ya expect though--that Stevie would join the coven?  There were some great scenes but as a whole "Magical Delights" was my least favorite episode thus far. It seemed disjointed as far as the storyline, dialogue, character motivation etc.

Random observations:

  • After Hank the Witch Killer offs everyone at her place, Marie heads on over to Fiona's. Let's stop there. Marie paid to have you all killed and you're going to invite her in for tea? Don't get me wrong, I'd like as many scenes between Angela and Jessica as possible but it just doesn't make sense. Anyway, the once mortal enemies are trying to bury the hatchet for now (and its not in each others heads). Together they conjure up a spell to target Hank's daddy's company. The Delphi Trust is targeted by the FBI and the price of it's stock tanks. Seriously? You kill people at the blink of an eye and that's all you're going to do to the witch hunters? I expected heads to explode or something...anything.
  • Marie tells Fiona she is immortal because she sold her soul to Papa Legba. Each year she must furnish him with a pure soul (the first being her infant daughter). I love the Papa Legba character. Much more of him please!  Fiona summons Papa (since she is dying of cancer) but he will not take her soul... because she has none to give. Where did her soul go? And who says you don't learn anything from this show? In Haitian voodoo, Legba is the gatekeeper between the living and the voodoo spirits. I need to further research this.
  • Madame LaLaurie did not appear in this episode. Maybe her head is watching TV over at Marie's place. And FrankenKyle is still MIA. He's probably running naked through the streets of New Orleans.
  • The best scene of the episode was between Cordelia and Myrtle. Myrtle offers Delia career advice "maybe you could be a cruise director dear" while playing a theremin (the world's weirdest mystical instrument). Will we see a musical number between Stevie and Myrtle in the future? I would love that!
  • Nan and Zoe try to visit Luke at the hospital but he's dead. Off to the Ramsey house they go to resurrect him. On no, he's been cremated! Nan attacks Joan, says she killed Luke and makes her drink Clorox.
  • Fiona and Marie drown Nan as a gift for Papa Legba instead of the baby.  Why? Did Fiona think she was the next Supreme? And Papa Legba only takes pure souls. Nan is not pure. She just killed the neighbor lady (I think). Yes, I know she had it coming.
  • Speaking of killing, Madison and Misty follow a funeral process to the cemetery. There Madison demonstrates her powers by raising a man from the dead. She then tricks Misty into getting near his coffin and shoves her in. Poor Misty!
  • And since no one ever really dies on this show I fully expect either Nan, Misty, Queenie or Luke to show up at any time.
Favorite Quotes:
  • “Your salad dressing is absolutely magic, maybe you could bottle it."-Career Counselor Myrtle to a depressed Delia.
  • "The mind reading's a real party trick Mumbles the Clown "-Madison to Nan.
  • "Don't be a hater dear, it's a theremin."- Myrtle to Delia.

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I would have given it a 3 but due to a couple of fun scenes I bumped it up some. I just hope the remaining episodes are better.
