Survivormans Secrets Of Survival: Dangers

"Survivorman's Secrets of Survival" has been airing on the Science channel since 9/6. It is a compilation of Les Stroud's previous shows. Each episode deals with one topic such as best methods for making a fire, purifying water, making a shelter, MacGyverisms, etc. I will try to do a blog entry on each but sometimes they're hard to catch. I really wish they provided an overview at the end of each show.

If you stop thinking, you stop trying. If you stop trying, you die. Les' top 5 things to keep in mind to stay safe are listed below:

5. Becoming Disoriented- Don't panic. Stop and think about what you're doing. Running around makes the situation much worse.

4. Getting Injured- Speed kills. A small injury may become a big problem in a wilderness situation.

3. Sleep Deprivation- is a silent killer in survival situations because it impedes the ability to make sound decisions.

2. Predators- Avoid any creatures with bright colors. Be careful of spiders, scorpions, bees, leaches, wasps, caterpillars and ants (especially the biting variety). Depending on where you are beware of poisonous snakes, lions, jaguars and bear. Where fresh water string rays exist, villagers are more afraid of them than anything else. I didn't think much about sting rays until the Steve Erwin tragedy.

1. Succumbing To The Elements-  Hypothermia is the main killer especially in the spring or the fall. It can sneak up on you and make you fall asleep and die. Avoid getting wet at all costs. You sweat, you die.
