The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 4 Recap: Not A Bethburger

Man They've Let This Place Go!

"Slabtown" is a Beth centric episode. While I really like Beth and am glad she didnt end a Bethburger back in Terminus, I do wish they would spend some time on the other team members. But no one asked me...so here's what happened this week:

Beth wakes up in a hospital bed. For a split second I pondered the possibility that the entire Walking Dead story was just a dream on Beth's part.  Dont tell me you didnt think the same thing! But that idea quickly dissipates when Beth looks out the window. She is in downtown Atlanta. There are zombie bodies everywhere.

Dont Trust Anyone In Clean Clothes

At Grady Memorial Hospital everyone works to earn their keep. Commune members get to eat (yummy guinea pig), have laundry facilities (yeah electricity!) and are protected from the zombies. Nothing is free though. If they save your life, you owe them. And if you're a woman, "owe" usually translates to having to have sex with various disgusting men.

Im Going To Sooo Enjoy Killing You

We meet several of the people that helped rescue Beth or captured her (depending on your perspective). The leader is a female police officer named Dawn. I'm not sure she's really a cop. She seems to be an egomaniac who turns a blind eye to what others are doing in order to keep the society intact. There is a physician named Dr Edwards. We think he's an OK guy until he tricks Beth into killing his main competition (another doctor). Gorman is a super creepy cop who wants to have his way with Beth (and all the other women). The only decent person seems to be a young janitor named Noah.

Hobble For Your Life Noah!

Before things get any worse, Beth is able to escape Gorman (who was offed by zombie Joan). That's what ya get dude! Beth and Noah make a break for it by crawling down the elevator shaft that they use as a body disposal system. Beth and Noah walking through the dead bodies at the bottom was really freaky. Once outside, Beth is quickly captured. She does shoot a number of zombies though. Beth's marksmanship is improving. The injured Noah hobbles away.

Carol Is Going To Kick Your Asses (As Soon As She Wakes Up)

Beth is not giving up and plans her next escape. In the final scene, an unconscious Carol is hauled into the hospital. You guys better watch out! Carol took out Terminus and she'll take out Grady Memorial too. Beth recognizes Carol but says nothing.

And remember last week when Daryl told someone it was safe to come out of the shadows? I assume that was Noah. We'll see next week (unless the entire episode is devoted to the DC crew and Eugene's hair).

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I would have given it a 4, but I'd like to see more of the other group members. The one person/location per episode setup makes the story move too slowly.
