The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Big Fat Liar

What? You're Not Really On A Top Secret Government Mission? How Shocking!

I'm a little behind and wanted to recap before the new show airs tonite (Sunday). "Self Help" focuses entirely on the DC Team. We have Abraham, Rosita, Eugene, Tara, Glenn and Maggie. Their goal is to get Eugene to DC since he knows how to stop the zombie plague. Everyone on the bus is happy and chatting. "Happy" is never a good sign on "The Walking Dead".

I Hear The Mullet Is Coming Back Into Style

They make fun of Eugene's mullet. Is it the source of his power? MulletMan will save the world! The bus suddenly swerves off the road and does a full rollovers. Luckily no one is seriously injured. They hold up in a bookstore. Thanks goodness zombies arent big readers.

Eugene is busy perving on Abe and Rosita as they have sex. Rosita says "he's watching again". Abe says "he's harmless". Tara who also feels like an outsider tries to talk to Eugene. Eugene confesses to sabotaging the bus. That dude is such a loser. Also did anyone else notice that Tara took a peek of Abe/Rosita in mid coitus? You'd think they'd get SOME privacy.

Too Bad You Didnt See ThIs Before You Opened The Door

We see a flashback of Abraham in a grocery store. He is protecting a woman and two children. Are they his family? They seem just as afraid of him as they are of the zombies. After Abraham downs all the walkers (one with a can of beans), he goes to sleep. When he awakens Abe sees a note that says "Dont try to find us". He goes outside and sees left of his family. There isnt much. Overcome with grief, he puts a gun to his mouth to pull the trigger. Just then Eugene comes running by. Zombies are after him. Abe quickly dispatches them. When Abe asks what he's doing, Eugene makes up the CDC mission on the spot... And the rest is history.

Someone's Taking This Mission A Little Too Seriously

Back in present time, the team is now on foot. They smell something bad (which I guess is a relative term during the apocalypse). Across the hill are hundreds (if not thousands) of walkers. Abe wants to go straight through them. Everyone else hesitates. He is adamant but it looks like a suicide mission, Eugene FINALLY yells out that it's all a lie, He made up the whole thing. He's not a PhD virologist. He's a high school science teacher. Well then...

Somebody's About To Get A Beatdown

Abraham beats the crap out of Eugene and then drops to the ground. His entire reason for living is gone. I will confess to badmouthing Eugene numerous times on Twitter I never believed he knew anything about the cure. He just seemed like a putz from the beginning. His lie has gotten an untold number of people (9 at least) killed. I find his behavior reprehensible. His situation however raises some interesting questions. If survival is the strongest base instinct, what would such a person do during the apocalypse? He apparently cant fight or shoot. He does seem to have some useful skills. He hosed down a bunch of zombies with that fire hose (which was creative). And his mission gave Abraham a reason to live.  So yes Eugene is a dud but he's still alive (which is more than we can say for lots of people).

Abe Is A Broken Man

Also speaking of Abraham, why was his family so afraid of him in the flashback. Did he have issues before we met him? And I'd think you'd want some people with anger control issues around when the walkers attack. The more, the better.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "Welcome to the human race asshole"- Tara to Eugene.
  • "Bikes dont burn"- Tara suggesting alternate forms of transportation after the bus caught fire.
  • "I cannot survive on my own. I cannot. If I don’t cure the disease, if I don’t save the world, I have no value. If I don’t fix things, no way you people would keep me around, share resources, even protect me.”- Eugene.
  • We’re friends. We have each other’s backs. That’s how it works."- Tara.
  • Abraham:  “I really need some ass." Glenn: “I didn’t need to know that but cool.”
  • "I lied. I'm NOT a scientist. I dont know how to stop it."- Eugene (ie MulletMan)

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). We finally got the big reveal about Eugene. But who's really surprised? And when will everyone be back together? I've said it many times before but the show is best when we DONT have to spend a week on each separate group. So can you DC people please turn around and go back to the church?
