666 Park Avenue Episodes 7-13 Reviews: The Devil Made Me Do It (Series Finale)

The last half of "666 Park Avenue" had a number of fun twists. Laurel is revealed to be Gavin and Olivia's presumed dead daughter Sasha. We're never really sure why Sasha faked her death (except that she hated Gavin). They accept her back but she still plots to have Gavin killed (by a priest wielding the knife used to murder Julius Caesar). Gavin foils the plot without much fanfare. Laurel is exiled to the staircase under the dragon mosaic in the basement.

Brian and Louis continue their tumultuous relationship. We learn that Alexis is not as bad as she seemed. Sure, she's trying to break up the couple but she is being forced to do so by Gavin. Otherwise, he'll make sure she never walks again. She was run over by Louis who was drunk one night. Gavin healed her in exchange for a "favor". Alexis continues to romance Brian (and makes sure Louis knows about it). The husband and wife bash her in the head and then wall her up in the basement. But Gavin makes a grand entrance and they take Alexis' place instead. Brian's play is a great success but no one ever sees the couple again.

Jane has a brief stint in the mental hospital after going missing for several days. She descended the staircase under the dragon mosaic in the basement and then popped up in Times Square several days later. She had no memory of what happened. Henry is concerned that Jane has mental issues (just as her mother did).

As Jane learns more about the hotel (thanks to her sleuthing with resident teenage psychic/clepto Nona), she realizes that she is connected to the Drake and was there as a child. Via hypnosis courtesy of Maris (ie Whoopie Goldberg), Jane meets her grandmother Jocelyn as a child. She was supposed to be sacrificed by a group of occultists lead by a guy named Harlan Moore. A young woman named Libby volunteered in order to save the child.

Jane goes to see 117 year old bed ridden Harlan. How is he still alive? He tells her about the Order of the Dragon and how to release Libby from the Drake's control. Unfortunately she's think about what else she might happen. Harlan miraculously reverts back to his younger self and takes up residence in the hotel. He is trying to create another dragon portal. I'm still not sure what his master plan was.

Jane learns that the detective (Hayden Cooper) that has been hanging around is actually a member of a secret society called the Conspiratii. Harlan's great granddaughternEunice belongs to it as well. Cooper has sworn to depend her. Unfortunately Gavin gets to them first and Hayden is sucked into the hotel's walls (and as so many others have been).

I'm still not sure what Olivia knows about Gavin. Is she just playing dumb or is she completely aware of all his misdeeds? She knows about the box that is locked in the safe. She even traps Harlan in it.

In the biggest reveal of the series, we learn Gavin was in love with Jane's mother and he drowned her in a tub at the Drake for spurning him. Jane is in fact... wait for it... she's Gavin's daughter. When Nate (who she thought was her father) tries to protect her by whisking her away, he is forced by Gavin to shoot Henry. Jane begs for Gavin to help Henry. He says it always come with a price. Fast forward one year later. Henry is now a city councilman. Jane has a completely different look (different hair, different makeup, different style, and different attitude). Gavin has big plans for the couple. Henry will rise to the top of the political ladder in the US. Then they'll take over the world (or something like that). Oh, and Jane is pregnant with what I assume is the Antichrist. And end scene.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I actually enjoyed "666 Park Avenue" much more than I expected. The cast is pretty, the horror is "light" (but entertaining) and there are some fun twists. Too bad the show ended after one season. I wanted to see more of Gavin and the multitude of souls stuck in the Drake.

I have one retraction to make before I close. I thought at the beginning of the series that Gavin was the Devil (with a capital "D"). Now, I'm thinking he's a lesser angel. He has some powers but they arent as all encompassing as one would thing the Prince of Darkness should have.
