YOU Series Review: Who Knew Stalking Could Be Such Fun?

"YOU" is a ten episode series currently viewable on NetFlix. It's based on a novel by Caroline Kepnes. The show was originally on Lifetime but didnt get major buzz until moving to the streaming service. "YOU" tells a love story through the eyes of a stalker. Joe (Penn Badgley) meets Beck (Elizabeth Lail) when she walks into his bookstore. He then proceeds to do some heavy stalking via social media. I must say social media has made stalkers life so much easier. .

Joe progresses to some IRL stalking. Poor Beck is not terribly observant. The dude is like two feet away from her in a baseball cap and she doesnt see him. Check your surroundings girl! It's also sad that no one in this show seems capable of being honest with each other-- not the leads, not the frenemies, and not even the therapist.

It is interesting to watch Joe as he justifies all of his actions. He convinces himself that he is doing what is best for Beck (even if it means knocking off a few of her closest friends, boyfriends, etc). It also skewers the myth of the knight in shining armor rescuing the damsel in distress. I seriously wish whatever women believe this would give it. You dont need to rescued. You need to rescue yourself and then find someone to share your life with.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I usually dont like rom-coms. However throwing a stalker into the mix and showing the story through his eyes is a great choice. Add a cautionary tale of putting your entire life on social media (which to me is scarier than the stalker). Add in some attractive leads, a bunch of lies, a few murders and I'm hooked.

Should we root for Jo to get the girl? Maybe some people are but I'm not falling for it. He is majorly cray cray. "YOU" has been renewed and will become a NetFlix original from here on out. I'm not sure what will happen next season but Ill be back to find out.
