Into The Dark: New Year, New You Review: With Friends Like These...

The fourth installment of the Hulu/Blumhouse series centers on New Year's Day. Four old high school friends reunite to celebrate the holiday. Three (Alexis, Kayla, Chloe) have continued to stay in touch. The fourth (Danielle) is now a wildly famous YouTube influencer (soon to have her own TV show). Danielle spouts all manner of BS self help slogans. Her favorite is "Nothing stands between me and my desires".

"New Year, New You" reminds me of the "Black Mirror" episode entitled Nosedive. That's the one where Bryce Howard tries to function in a society where every minute social interaction is curated and rated for sharing on social media. Scary stuff!

After initial pleasantries, the ladies agree to play a game of "Never Have I Ever". I'd just like to say for the record that no good ever comes from playing that game. Why do people keep doing it? Havent there been enough deaths and broken relationships? Anywho, as predicted, all hell breaks loose as long buried secrets simmer to the surface. I'm not sure who played who the best in the end but it was a lot of fun to watch.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). This is my favorite "Into The Dark" entry yet. Millennial ladies plus long buried secrets plus social media obsessiveness makes a recipe for disaster. After watching "New Year, New You" I think I'll stick with my usually tame New Year's plans. Cause with friends like these, who needs enemies.
