"Fear The Walking Dead" returns with an episode entitled
"Grotesque". When we last saw our survivors, Daniel had burnt down
Celia's house (and presumable died in the process). Travis and Killer Chris
were off roaming the countryside. Nick refused to leave with Madison, Strand,
Alicia and Ofelia. Instead he wanted to frolick with the zombies.
This week features Nick walking 100 miles to Tijuana and
doing all sorts of stupid stuff in between. He could have gotten a nice car
ride from Sophia and her son but nope. Instead he takes a jug of water and sets
off through the desert. He loses all his belongings when he decides to bed down
in an unprotected space. No need to worry. That fire won't draw any attention.
He's just lucky a crazy woman with a bat found him and not a horde of walkers.
Next he drinks from a cactus. Bad idea. He throws up all over the place. He's
so thirty that he drinks his own urine. Gross. Plus that will only help short
term. Nick needs to get some water stat
Dogs attack Nick as he sleeps and badly injure his leg. A swarm of
zombies is nearby. Luckily, they eat the dogs instead of Nick. Nick has some
dead doggie meat and hobbles away.
He joins the zombie horde. Are they really communicating with him or is Nick hallucinating? Is Nick the "Zombie Whisperer"? A guy is target practicing on the undead. The bullet's whiz past NIck but he isnt injured. The stupid guy drops his ammo and is eaten. Uh, just a thought but maybe you should have... I dont know... RAN FOR YOUR LIFE!
Nick passes out from his leg injury. A woman named Luciana spots
him on the road but leaves him there. Nick finally gets to a town. He runs into
Luciana's crew again. This time they take him to a doctor. The doc patches him
up and reveals a thriving community.
Will Nick pull a "TWD" and cause all the nice townsfolk
to lose their lives? Will he get bored and take off on his own again? Does
anyone care? I'm afraid I dont. I really want to like you Nick but so far
you're acting like a big dummy. You wouldn't survive 5 minutes during the
"actual" zombie apocalypse... I mean if such a thing actually
existed.
Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5). I keep getting my hopes up, only to
have "FTWD" dash them. Perhaps I'm being too hard on Nick. After all,
he's never encountered zombies before. But how much do you need to know? They
want to EAT YOU. It's not too difficult to figure out.
Yes I know Nick is an addict and addiction is a disease but he
still acts irrationally. His life has been a lot easier than many peoples. He
has a good support system. We see his time in rehab via a flashback. His
girlfriend Gloria. Remember she was the first zombie we encountered on the
show. His mom Madison is also there. Nick is mad at his daddy (who later dies
in a car crash). Nick, you're a big ole whiner. I have the feeling Nick
will always survive regardless of his behavior. Some one will always bail him
out.
The good news is there are actually ZOMBIES in this episode. They
were few and far between last year. Definitely an improvement.
"Grotesque" was kinda boring though since it focused solely on one
person. Hopefully we'll see more of Team Madison next week.
