Scream Season 2 Overview: Your Time Is Up

"Scream" is one of those shows that should know when to bow out gracefully. Yes, I'm looking at you "Wayward Pines". Season 1 was an interesting who-dun-it (although the finale was a bit of a let down). Season 2 is more of the same old, same old though. I dont really care about any of the characters. They continually shift from victim to potential killer and back to victim again. Yes, I know this show is geared more towards the MTV crowd but "Scream" could use more character development.

Season 2 opens with Audrey returning from a psychiatric facility. She was there for three months due to PSTD caused by the events of season 1. She now has dreams that she's the killer. The rest of the Lakewood Six (Audrey, Noah, Brooke, and Kieran) are still kicking. Jake is soon dispatched.

Some new characters arrive this year. There's Zoe (love interest of Noah). There's Miguel Acosta and his son Stavo. Lakewood needed a new sheriff after Kieran's father spilled his guts (literally). There's also Eli (Kieran's cousin). Mrs Lang rounds out the new players. She's a teacher and harmless wierdo (or so it seems).

Over the course of 12 episodes we learn that Audrey brought Piper to Lakewood to make a documentary about Brandon James. She unfortunately didnt know that Piper was a crazy loon.

The death toll in season 2 includes: Jake (killed with a scythe), Eddie (killed at the motel with a corkscrew), Zoe (drowned in a coffin), Haley (stabbed and hung from a banner), Mayor Maddox (killed with a pitchfork), Mr Branson (lost his hand and then died in a house fire), and Eli (killed by Kieran after Emma shot him the first time). Both Noah and Brooke are stabbed but live.

We already know the season 1 killer was Piper Shaw (love child of Emma's mother Maggie and Brandon James). After many red herrings, the season 2 killer is revealed to be Kieran (who was in a relationship with Piper). Seriously, how long was it going to take Emma to figure that out?

I thought for sure there would be someone else besides Kieran involved. That's typically how the "Scream" movies work. My suggestions for killers would be: 1. A team of at least two people if not more (maybe Audrey and Noah), 2, Brooke, or 3. Emma's mom. I never thought it was really Emma.

We catch up with everyone three month's after Kieran's incarceration. Brooke seems to have been adopted by the Acosta family. Emma and Audrey are BFFs again. Noah is back to doing his podcast. Mrs Lang is writing her book "The Madness Of Two".

In the final scene, Kieran gets a phone call from someone that says "Hello Kieran. Who told you you could wear my mask"? Duh, duh, duh. There's still someone else involved. Is it Brandon James? Does anyone care? I dont.

Grade: 2 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Sorry "Scream", I'm moving on to better shows. You had potential but fizzled in the end. The show just isnt scary enough for my taste. The death toll is seriously low for a show about serial killers. I only count 4 major deaths in season 2 (Jake, Zoe, Mayor Maddox and Mr Branson). Everyone else was peripheral.

This season seemed to seriously drag. It could be because there are two more (unnecessary) episodes this year. Even the finale was ho hum. When the killer called Emma he said "You will never feel safe again". Then Kieran said "You will feel safe again". Seriously? That's it? People do sometimes coincidentally use the same phrase. But not one asked me. Also what was Kieran's motive in all of this? Yes, he had a crazy girlfriend. Yes, he had already killed before he met Piper. All he says on the topic is that "killing people is cheaper than therapy". OK then.

My low opinion of "Scream" is not due the actors though. They gave it their all. They just didnt have much to work with. There is a "Scream" Halloween special planned. I'm not sure I'll be watching.
