Legends Of Tomorrow Season 1 Overview: Don't Call Us Heroes

Currently in it's second season, "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" airs on Thursday nights. It's part of CW's superhero lineup along with SuperGirl, Flash and Green Arrow.

There were 16 episodes total in season 1. I'll just hit the highlights here. In the year 2166 the world is controlled by immortal baddie Vandal Savage. Time Master Rip Hunter steals a time machine called the Waverider from the Time Council and heads back to 2016 to get some help. Savage previously killed his wife and children. Rip gathers a band of misfits and criminals. But as the intro says, dont call them "superheroes". Instead call them "legends". The group (which we've seen on various episodes of Green Arrow/Flash) include:

  • White Canary/Sara Lance- This one is a little confusing but here goes. Sara was originally Canary on "Arrow". She died but was resurrected in the Lazarus Pit and took the new name. Her sister became Black Canary.
  • Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders/Chay-Ara- one half of the hawk team. Kendra has been continually reincarnated for some 4000 along with her soul mate Carter.
  • Hawkman/Carter Hall/Khufu- along with Kendra, Carter has continually been reincarnated throughout time. He was previously an Egyptian prince and she was a princess (or priestess).
  • Atom/Ray Palmer- thanks to a suit he developed, Ray can shrink down to microscopic sizes. He may be small but he carries a major wallop.
  • Firestorm/ Martin Stein- one half of Firestorm along with Jefferson Jackson. Martin is a professor and nuclear physicist.
  • Firestorm/ Jefferson Jackson- Jefferson is the other half of Firestorm. Firestorm is interesting because it is composed of two very different people who must work together.
  • Heat Wave/ Mick Rory- a criminal whose partner is Leonard Snart. He's an arsonist and uses heat as a weapon. He wants to "see the world burn".
  • Captain Cold/Leonard Snart- criminal partner of Heat Wave but instead of using heat, he uses cold. The character is played by Wentworth Miller.

The group travels back and forth to various times in an attempt to "right" history. Stops include 1975, 1986, 2046, 1958, 1960, 2147, 1871, 2014, 2166, 1944 (and in the finale 1958, 1975 and 2021). Chronos and a group called the Hunters are in hot pursuit. The team attempts to fix alterations while not changing history's outcome. Any small differences can have massive unknown effects. Oh and did we mention aliens are supposed to attack Earth in 2175?

During their travels we meet lots of relatives including Savage's daughter and Hawkgirl/Hawkman's various children and incarnations. The team must also protect their younger selves from being murdered.  Kendra and Ray have a love connection but it doesnt work out. The group visits Green Arrow in the future. Sara joins up with the League of Assassins for a while. They meet Jonah Hex in the Wild West. The battle between giant robot Leviathan (Savage) and a really big Atom was also great fun.

In the end, Kendra and Scythian (a version of Carter) stay back in 2016. Hawkman had already bitten it earlier in the season. Snart is dead (since he has to go back to work on "Prison Break") and Vandal is dead (because he was a bad villain). Rip is MIA and Sara will become the new captain in season 2.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). There was some aimless wandering at times but overall I still enjoyed the show and most of the characters (although Hawkgirl and Hawkman never did it for me). Savage wasnt a very menacing villain but there was still enough else going on to keep me interested.
