Scream Queens Season 2 Episodes 5-10 Reviews: Who Survives The Green Meanie/s? (Series Finale)

I finally got around to watching the rest of "Scream Queens". After LOVING the first season, the sophomore offering was at times a snoozer. The story (serial killer on the loose in a hospital) doesn't have enough depth to sustain it through ten episodes. Dont get me wrong. "Scream Queens" has a number of positives going for it:

  • Number One is FBI Special Agent Denise Hemphill. Neicy Nash takes what was initially a small part and turns it into comedic genius. Can Denise PLEASE have her own spinoff?
  • Number Two is Hester/ Chanel #6. I had only seen Lea Michele previously in "Glee". She plays psycho so convincingly here, I'm a little afraid of her.
  • Number Three is Dean/Dr Cathy Munsch. Jamie Lee Curtis. She has perfect comic timing and is the original "Scream Queen"
  • Number Four are the mean girl Chanels. Yes, they're horrible human beings but they're still delightful to watch.

When we last show our favorite dysfunctional people the Green Meanie had whacked his way through several patients/staff (including Chad Radwell). Chanel #5 barely escaped death and Denise appeared to be a goner. Chanel #1, Chanel #3, Zayday, Dr Brock Holt, Dr Cassidy Cascade, Dr Munsch and Nurse Hoffel were still among the living.

We finally learn the identity/identities of the Green Meanie. There are actually three:

  1. Wes- Grace's father. He turns out to be the father of both Grace (currently in a mental asylum) and Hester (currently a psychopath). Say what?
  2. Cassidy- he's the "baby in the belly" of the pregnant woman who sought help at the hospital all those years ago. His mother puts him up to avenging his father's death. Did we also mention that Jane is Wes' sister? Small world.
  3. Nurse Hoffel- she's out to get the Chanels because her sister Agatha Bean was the maid at the KKT house. Chanel shoved her face into a hot fryer of peanut oil.
  4. Hester- not technically a Green Meanie but she is in cahoots with them.Hester is her usual delightfully crazy self. At one point all the Meanie's hold a meeting to determine who can kill whom. Hester brings the murder board. They trade victims like playing cards. Fun scene!

Nurse Hoffel offs Wes in a vat of peanut oil (how poetic). She attempts to blow everyone else up but they are saved when Denise is thawed from the cryogenic chamber and defuses the bomb thanks to an episode of "Quantico".

They chase Hoffel to the swamp. Cassidy is killed when he jumps in front of a machete meant for his true love Chanel #3. Hoffel falls into quicksand and dies. No one even tries to help her except Cathy (who makes a half hearted attempt).

In the end, Chanel #1 stars in her own TV show "Lovin The C" since there was a opening after Brooke Sheild's died from drinking poisoned coffee. Chanel #3 is her Executive Producer.

Munsch is not dying from kuru (from eating human brains) after all. She moves to Aspin where she becomes a renowned sex therapist for women over 50. Chanel #5 (who turns out to be some sort of medical genius) runs CURE Institute along with Zayday (whom I'm sure is happy to be out of a pit for a while).

Since Cathy is NOT dying, Brock wont be collecting on her inheritance anytime soon. Have no fear. Hester poses as Munsch and withdraws all her money from the bank. Brock and Hester buy Blood Island where they wait for unsuspecting tourists to arrive so they can hunt them down. That doesnt sound like a very good vacation!

And in the final scene, in true horror movie fashion Chanel gets into her car at the studio only to find the Red Devil in the back seat. Let this be a lesson kids. Always look in the back seat FIRST. Who is this Red Devil? Is it Grace back from the asylum to avenge her father? Do we really care at this point?

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Despite lots of positives, "Scream Queens" doesnt have a cohesive enough structure to push it into the great category. It also doesnt help that Ryan Murphy continues his tradition of putting the finale in the wrong place. Typically what should be the finale is instead 1-2 episodes earlier. Why does he keep doing this? The big reveals should be in the finale... not before. I assume given the poor ratings this is the last we'll see of "Scream Queens". If so, I choose to fondly remember season 1 as an example of how good the show could be. And I'm still holding out for a FBI Special Agent Denise Hemphill spinoff.
