The Mist Review: Skip This Version, Try The 2007 Movie And/Or The Novella Instead
Spike TV (who is not necessarily known for original programming) began airing the ten part series on June 22. "The Mist" is based on the Stephen King novella by the same name.
If you're unfamiliar with the basic premise, here goes. A mysterious mist descends upon the small town of Bridgeville/Bridgeton/Something, Maine. Residents including the Copeland family (father Kevin, mother Eve, and daughter What's-Her-Name) are trapped in various locations. Some make a break for it and suffer the consequences (although we cant initially see who/what is killing them).
I watched the first three episodes online but am going to pass on the rest. It's just not doing it for me. The pace is too slow. I dont care about any of the characters (which is never a good sign). Alyssa Sutherland (Queen Aslaug from "Vikings") is OK but doesnt have enough to do. I'm glad to see Frances Conroy of "American Horror Story" but again wish she was better utilized. This adaptation also goes heavy on the stereotypes (political, racial, etc). It's too much. This is a story about ordinary people trying to deal with extraordinary circumstances. No one cares about that other stuff when push comes to shove.
Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5). If you haven't heard of "The Mist" previously, this adaptation might be worth a watch. Otherwise, stick with the 2007 movie staring Thomas Jane (EXCELLENT performance), Marcia Gary Harden and Laurie Holden (Andrea on "The Walking Dead"). Another "TWD" alum, Melissa McBride (Carol) also makes an appearance. The show not on NetFlix but is available on Amazon Video here. Or another idea, crack open the 1980 novella and read the original. It's available on Amazon here Your imagination is probably MUCH better at conjuring up the horrors than what we see on television anyway.
