Midnight, Texas Series Premiere Review: True Blood's Boring Cousin

NBC's latest horror offering is "Midnight, Texas". It's based on a Charlaine Harris book series. The plot is pretty simple. Psychic Manfred is fleeing from some bad dudes. His dead grandma Xylda tells Manfred to head for the tiny town of Midnight, Texas. We soon learn why. Many of the Midnight's inhabitants are also "special". There's vampires, witches, angels, clairvoyants, weretigers, ghosts, demons and a few assorted humans (including an assassin). No, I' don't know why.

Despite all the supernatural creatures, there's nothing new in "Midnight". We pretty much know "what" everyone is by the end of the first two episodes. The central murder case isnt very interesting. None of the characters are allowed to be too sexy since it's network television (NBC). The CGI is hokey at times. The wrestling match between Lem (a vampire) and the Rev (a weretiger) was particularly unrealistic.

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). "Midnight Texas" doesnt have enough bite to keep me coming back for more. My suggestion would have been to take the money from this show and do a "True Blood" Pam spinoff instead. She had some of the best lines ever uttered on TV. One of my favorites is "I am wearing a f^#%g Walmart sweatsuit for y'all. If that's not a demonstration of team spirit, I don't know what is." Love you Pam!!! Miss you!!!
