Wynonna Earp Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Untangling The Complicated Mythology Of "Wynonna Earp"

I have been a loyal fan of the EXCEEDING FABULOUS "Wynonna Earp" since episode 1. Despite being a regular viewer, I'm a bit confused by the mythology of the show. Below is my attempt to sort out the "why's" of the Earp curse. Fellow #Earpers, feel free to correct me comments below is something is wrong.

What Is The Earp Curse?
When we first meet Wynonna, she has returned to her hometown of Purgatory. She is Wyatt Earp's great great granddaughter. Wynonna soon learns about the Earp curse. On their 27th birthday, the oldest Earp descendant becomes the "heir". This person must kill all the revenants (read: demons) that were originally shot by lawman Wyatt Earp. They are continually resurrected as heirs die. Wyatt's gun (Peacemaker) is the only thing that will kill them (and it can only be fired by the heir). The Revenants can not leave the Ghost River Triangle (which is the area around Purgatory).

How Can You Identify A Revenant?
The only way to know for sure if to point Wyatt's gun at them. If it glows, they're a revenant. We have not met all the revenants yet. Most seem to be bad but there may be a few good ones. Last week's episode gave us an entirely different spin on Bobo (AKA Robert Svain). Robert was a close friend of Wyatt and died trying to protect him. Wyatt shot through Robert to kill Clootie (thus sealing Bobo's fate as a revenant for all eternity). That's really sad cause Robert seemed like a genuinely nice man. This week we learned Rosita is a revenant but we dont know the details. Let's hope she's one of the good guys.

How To Break The Curse?
All 77 revenants must be killed with the Peacemaker.

What Are The Bad Guys Up To?
We meet Constance Clootie (the Stone Witch) in season 1. Her husband is the worst of the revenants and created the curse. Constance spent much of last year trying to resurrect her sons. But it seems (correct me if I'm wrong) that she worked with Robert in the past to keep her husband IN THE GRAVE. She even locked the other two wives (known as the Widows) in a box so they couldnt break the seals.

In present day, the Widows will do whatever is necessary to resurrect Clootie. They have taken over the bodies of the Gardner sisters-- Mercedes and Beth. One of the two poor women is still alive in the basement but doesnt have a face.

The first two seals have already been broken. Little do they know that the third is Doc's ring (which was Constance's wedding ring). He cant take the ring off though or he will begin to age. He is after all ~150 years old. Just a reminder that the Stone Witch gave Doc immortality (he was previously dying of tuberculosis) but left him in a well for all eternity for killing her sons.

I'm glad Doc and Jeremy finally learn the truth about the Widows. Perhaps they can use the two against each since they seem to be having a bit of a spat.

But Wait. It's Even MORE Complicated.
To add more strangeness to the mix, Waverly (Wynonna's sister) may be a part revenant. Is her father Bobo? Also Wynonna's baby is possibly half revenant. Wynonna had a one night stand with Jonas (whom she sent back to Hell last week). Of course, Doc Holliday may instead be the Baby Daddy. And to add yet another variable, Wynonna also has feelings for Lizard/Dragon Man Dolls.

Where We Left Off?
This week Doc bought a creepy picture and headed over to Wynonna's for dinner. The doll from the painting came to life. I think it at least partially controlled Doc and Wynonna's feelings since they were quite mean to each other. If not, that was seriously out of character. But the doll doesnt retrieve the ring. It is sent back to Hell. Doc gets down on one knee (proposal style) and gives the ring to Wynonna. Once the baby is born, they will end the curse together.

In other news, Tucker Gardner fakes his death and makes a beeline for Waverly. She is saved from Tucker by Rosita (whom he killed a few minutes earlier). But Rosita is a revenant, so...SURPRISE!. Tucker is later chomped on by Widow Beth. Is he really dead now? I hope so. Tucker is the worst.

Let's not forget that Wynonna "technically" dying last week could have all sorts of ramifications. The only thing we've seen thus far is that Robert is back. You can bet he wont be as nice as the last time we saw him.

Meanwhile Widow Mercedes is at Nicole's front door. Uh, oh. It's not looking good. What does she have to do with the curse? I've always suspected there is much more to Officer Haught that we see. I just hope she and Waverly end up together in the end. Is there any chance that could happen?

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). The Doc/Wynonna conversation seemed a bit out character but I'm chalking it up to that creepy doll. There were a number of great reveals this week with Rosita and Waverly sharing secrets. I'm sad though. There are ONLY 3 episodes left this season. Thankfully "Wynonna Earp" has been renewed for next year. Otherwise, I dont think I could go on with my life.
