Superstition Episode 1 Review: Has Potential But Needs Some Work

"Superstition" premieres on SyFy on October 20th. It is currently available on demand and on  the SyFy website. The show takes place in the small town of La Rochelle, Georgia. Calvin Hastings (Brad James) returns home after being in the military for some sixteen years. He has lost contact with his parents Issac (Mario Van Peebles) and Bea (Robinne Lee).  Van Peebles company MVPTV also produces the show. The family runs the local funeral home which also doubles as the city's morgue. The family is well equipped to handle any type of spookiness that may arise. They have lots of arcane knowledge and some mad fighting skills.

I wont give the specifics of the pilot away, but a mysterious stranger arrives bearing some coins that are best avoided. I'm sure we'll see more supernatural creepy crawlies in the episodes to come. The town is built on some sort of hellmouth or votex.

The pilot had a B movie quality (not that that's always a bad thing). Some of the special effects were a bit hokey. Could they have spent a bit more money on the FX snakes? And some of the stunt sequences were clearly staged.

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). "Superstition" has potential but could use some work. I'll need to see some compelling monsters and/or interesting family dynamics to keep coming back. I'll check in again later and see how it's progressing.
