I only watched season 1 of "Slasher:" on Chiller because of Katie McGrath. See reviews here But she's busy now on "Supergirl" and doesnt have time for Canadian horror flicks. In fact, NetFlix's "Slasher: Guilty Party" has absolutely nothing to do with season 1. That's because, like "American Horror Story", "Slasher" is an anthology where a different story is told each season. Just as well since "Executioner" is a bit hokey.
The premise of "Guilty Party" is as follows. Five years have passed since five friends (Dawn, Peter, Noah, Susan, and Andi) were summer counselors at Camp Motega. They share a dark secret. They murdered a fellow counselor named Talvinder (Tal) because she was "a nasty bitch". Their words, not mine. A resort is being built on the property. Developers might discover Tal's body so the group returns (in the middle of winter of course) to try to move/burn her. Hmmm, where have I heard this premise before? Oh yes, it's "Friday The 13th". I hope Jason Vorhees shows up and starts macheting these losers.
The ex-counselors and hippies who live on the land's commune get to know each other. The permanent residents (which include: Rene, Antoine, Judith, Wren, Mark, and Keira) are all peace, love and yoga. I suspect more is going on than meets the eye.
Almost immediately the killing starts. Sexy tracker dude who brought the group in on snowmobiles is relaxing in the sauna. Someone is hitting the door with snowballs. He investigates. That's the end of Gene. He is quickly sliced stem to stern with a chainsaw. That was quick and totally disgusting. People start dropping like flies. Suspicion continually shifts. If nothing else, we can mark the dead off the list as the killer. ...Or can we???
I'm about ready to give up on show (because it's the same horror slock I've seen a million times) when something interesting happens. They start going into the back story and secrets of each person. Hmmm, interesting. Maybe I'll keep watching a bit longer. Also these actors arent half bad. Despite the material, they're giving it their all.
Will anyone survive this ordeal? Place your bets now. There's also a few surprise twists that I enjoyed. I won't disclose specifics though. It would ruin the fun. If this sounds remotely interesting, give "Slasher: Guilty Party" a try.
Grade: 3 3/4 Monsters (out of 5 total). Season 2 of "Slasher" started off as your usual B grade affair. There are tons of horror tropes. The acting and surprise twists however elevate the series. And with just eight episodes total it's a quick watch.
