Orphan Black Episode 4 Recap: Effects of External Clone Conditions

Another week of clonefighting for SarahBeth. We find out the bad clone is named Helena. As we suspected, she is indeed on the crazy train. She scrawls bible verses and strange pictures on walls, speaks in riddles, and gives children the worst toys ever to play with. What do you call those paper things we used to play with as kids? Alison pretends to be Sarah and visits Kira. Sometimes there are advantages to being a clone.

Points to ponder:

  • What's up with that fish symbol on Helen's knife and Maggie Chen's tattoo? Maybe they all belong to the same sorority. I've heard some bad stuff goes down in those (like giving each other bad hairdos and makeovers).
  • How did Helena get all those scars? Apparently she's trying to carve angel wings into herself. Say what? Honey, you can buy a cute set at the costume shop and save a lot of bloodshed.
  • Is Helena really the original clone? Maybe it's like Resident Evil where they just make a big batch and get rid of the bad ones. I do the same thing when I make cookies.
  • Who was in the van that picked up Helena? I didn't think it was just the clones trying to kill each other.
  • The fish on the blade is a symbol of "fecundity". I had to look that up. Fecundity, derived from the word fecund, generally refers to the ability to reproduce. In demography,[1][2] fecundity is the potential reproductive capacity of an individual or population.

Wikipedia:

Episode 4 "Effects of External Conditions"
Sarah realizes that the Orphans’ survival is going to take more than police work. But tracking the killer threatens Sarah’s long awaited reunion with her daughter, Kira. As Sarah gets closer to the killer, the killer gets closer to the truth – the ensuing showdown threatens to expose her ruse as a cop.

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5).  This episode seemed slower paced than the others. Not sure what I expect though since they can't just keep adding new clones each week. We did find out more about Helena (who is batsh#%^ crazy). I would be worried if I was related to her.
