Vikings Episode 5 Recap: If Youre Not Watching Vikings You Should Be

This episode might have been called "Stuck" instead of "Raid". The Earl is out to get Ragnar because a seer told him Ragnar wishes to take his place. He is "stuck" between losing his position and trying to change what the gods might want.

Poor Ragnar doesn't have many options to get away from the Earl. He can't just move to the next Viking town over. He can't move to the England with his family (given that he already killed a bunch of people there and stole their stuff). He also doesn't have a farm anymore since the Earl burnt it down. And could he have been any closer to being killed? He is "stuck" between trying to provide for and protect his family and the Earl's wrath.

Athelstan can't survive by himself but doesn't want to be a slave (even though Ragnar treats him much better than others would). He's also conflicted about his Christian beliefs and what he hears of the Norse gods. He is "stuck" between his old home and his new home.

Siggy doesn't want her daughter to marry but the Earl didn't ask her. She is also apparently fooling around with Rollo (well who isn't on this show). She warns Rollo to leave but he doesn't. I predict the Earl will end up killing Siggy. She is "stuck" because she's a woman with few options.

Rollo is "stuck" due to his jealousy of Rollo (a man who has it all including Lagertha who Rollo wants) and his inability to play by the rules.

Episode synopsis from history.com
In the Great Hall of Kattegat, a seer reads Earl Haraldson's future and tells him that Ragnar Lothbrok searches for his death. The unanswerable question is whom the gods favor more? As a man willing to defend his power and status to the death, Haraldson intends to take precautionary measures. Ragnar, his home and farm burned by the Earl, is hurt but hidden safely away. He must now choose the path that will lead him back to his freedom.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I especially enjoyed the opening fight scene and when Ragnar and family escaped. If you're not watching Vikings, you should be.
