Dracula Episode 5 Recap: Dirty Dancing Victorian Style

Nope nothing uncomfortable about a unbelievably handsome man staring deeply into my finance's eyes as they hold each other tightly while dancing

This is one of my most favorite episodes of "Dracula" to date. And of course there wont be many more since the show has been canceled. I believe "Dracula's" downfall in the beginning episodes was focusing too much on "businessspeak". No one cares about the Order of the Dragon multinational corporation. The show is best when balancing interpersonal relationships with the sticky goodness that is vampires.

In "The Devil's Waltz" Lucy throws the biggest/best engagement party for Mina and Jonathan that London has ever seen. It is of course at Grayson's mansion.Interspersed with the party scenes, is poor Renfield being tortured. The tortures keeps asking "Who does Alexander Grayson love?" Seriously you're torturing a guy and that's the only question you can come up with? Renfield will not give up Grayson though.

We flashback to how the Renfield and Grayson first met. Dracula was talking with some men on a train. Renfield offered legal advise (he is a lawyer). The men don't like this and start to beat and kick him. The camera shoots Renfield laying on the floor looking up as Dracula dispatches with everyone. He throws one out the window. He walks by with the head of another. Great camera work! Dracula offers Renfield a job and he accepts.: "I will share with you all my secrets and your life will never be the same"- Dracula to Renfield.
And back in present day Dracula finds the torturer's hideout and you can guess what happens next. Dracula pulling the arm off that guy was fun.

Back at the party Grayson has the first dance with Mina. It is quite evident to everyone-- Jayne, Lucy and even super dense Jonathan-- that something is going on between Mina and Alexander. The camera pans around to get everyone's reactions. Dracula rips Harker's throat out in front of the crowd. Nope it's a psy out. He's just day dreaming.

In storyline #3 Van Helsing and Grayson are still working on a cure so Dracula can go out in the sunlight. They experiment on a female vampire. That doesn't go so well since she eventually bursts into flames. In storyline #4 Jonathan finds out more about Genera Shaw but none of us really care.

And in the end, everyone is a mess. Lucy is crying on the stairs because she's in love with Mina. Jayne is trying to fight off the realization that she is in love with Grayson (who is really a vampire). Dracula is at home tending to a badly injured Renfield. Who knows what Jonathan is up to.

Lucy loves Mina but Mina is completely oblivious/
Girl, join a softball league and meet a nice girl in sensible shoes to settle down with.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). A very enjoyable episode. It's a shame that "Dracula" has been canceled since it seems to finally be reaching it's stride. Only 2 more episodes are scheduled that I know of-- 12/6 and 1/3.
