Defiance Season 3 Episode 8 Review: Henceforth Datak Will Be Known As Stubby Tarr

Sorry this review is a little late. I've been out of town and am just now catching up. The appropriately titled "My Name Is Datak Tarr And I Have Come To Kill You" was great fun. Here's the highlights:

This Is Seriously Better Than Acid

When we last saw Stahma, she had been telepathically transported to the orbiting Omec spacecraft. When the ship is back online, the Omecs will enslave and/or eat everyone else on earth. Why is Kindzi giving away all their secrets? So Daddy will be forced to kill Stahma of course. But the plan backfires when T'evgin returns home to find his daughter misbehaving yet again. Stahma says Kindzi is dangerous and must be stopped. T'evgin tells the Casti to mind her own business. It seems T'evgin has developed a fondness for other species though. He's sweet on Stahma. But who wouldnt be? He also saves a woman (yes that's Doc Yewll without her makeup) and her children from an irate VC.

I Hope T'evgin Has A Good Dental Plan

Elsewhere the Votans attack the NeedWant (killing ten civilians). Rahm says he will let everyone walk out if they bring down the stasis net. That's a big fat lie. Nolan organizes an attack party and asks a newcomer named Beckman to join them. We know what Nolan does not. Beckman is really the Indogene who is working with Rahm. He just has a human face now. Does no one find it strange that Beckman just appears that day? Apparently not. Anyway, Bebe blows up a tunnel with most of the recruits inside. Irisa saves Nolan from sure death by stabbing Bebe over and over again. Looks like she's gotten over her aversion to violence.

The VC Apparently Love A Good Show

And in the main event, Defiance must strike back against Rahm before its too late. Doc Yewll will create a detonator to use the power from the stasis net to create an explosion. The only problem is it has to be hand delivered to General Rahm (so it's a suicide mission). Datak (who was last seen hanging on the Shaming Rack) will go in order to regain his honor and get a posthumous pardon for himself and Stahma. He also does it to protect an injured Alak and grandson Luke. Datak arrives at the VC camp and is greeted by Tak. We think Datak is for sure a goner. But the crazy Casti has something up his sleeve (pun intended). He saws off his arm (with the detonator inside it) and then flees the area. General Tak and the rest of the VC are blown to kingdom come. When we last see the one armed Datak, he's laying on the ground smiling.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "This is some gangster ass shit."- Rahm upon seeing Datak cut his arm off.
  • "You have no honor!"- T'evgin right before he rips out the VC goon's throat.

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). Yes the resolution to the VC storyline was a little too pat but who cares. Bonus points for badass Datak (or should we call him Stubby now?). I also enjoyed the flashbacks to Datak and Pappy Tarr (who apparently was very religious). Datak was of questionable character even back then. I've said it before but the Tarrs make this show for me. I'm also starting to love the Omecs. I dont really care about the human story lines (sorry, no offence Amanda and Nolan).
