Wayward Pines Episode 10 Review: Well There Goes The Neighborhood (Series Finale)

"Cycle" is one of the best finales I've seen in recent history. It is nonstop action from beginning to end (if you ignore the last five minutes of the show). Last week Ethan tried to give everyone the score. It's 4028 and they are the last humans on earth. David Pilcher retaliated by turning off the town's electricity (and power to the perimeter wall). Uh oh. David will allow the citizens to be murdered and then repopulate with Group C. Remember Group A was also previously wiped out. Pilcher says they killed each other upon learning the truth (but I highly doubt it). I think David wiped them out too.

David Has Some Serious Control Issues

Abbies come flooding into Wayward Pines and gnaw anyone in sight. They are fast and hungry. The poor residents have no idea what is happening and no way to defend themselves. Pam pleads with her brother to spare them. David repays her efforts by refreezing her in a stasis chamber. Luckily one of the volunteers unthaws her. Pam shoots David. It's about time. The guy was a nut case.

Who's Ready To Kick Some Serious Abbey Ass?

Back in town, abbeys are still eating citizens in the streets. Kate is almost killed when an abbey comes in through the skylight of her shop. Everyone flees to the underground area known as Lot 33. There they find lots of resources (including weapons). The stash is for the First Generation in the event of an emergency. The tunnels also connect to David's headquarters in the mountain overlooking town.

Abbies breach the bunker. After several tense moments, some of the people (including Ben, Amy, Theresa and Kate) escape. Harold (Kate's husband) is dead. It looks like Mrs Fisher is dead too. Ethan stays behind so he can blow up the elevator shaft (and as many abbeys as possible). I'm not sure what he hopes to accomplish. There are lots more abbies still in town so this wont put a very big dent in them... but no one asked me. Ben sticks his head down the elevator shaft and calls for her father. Just then, some shrapnel rains down and bonks him on the head. I assume that was not meant to be funny but it made my laugh.

Life has apparently settled down again. Pam and Kate talk amongst the people pods. They'll start a kinder gentler society and live happily ever after... or will they???

Deja Vu All Over Again

Ben awakens in the hospital. Amy is by his side. It's three years later. He goes outside. We see Ben framed in the same scene where we met Ethan during episode 1. Ben heads to the park. There are several people hanging near a large statue of David Pilcher. One has a sign that reads "Do Not Try To Leave". It appears the first generation won after all. The adults have been put back into stasis. Uh oh.

And Somewhere Mrs Fisher Is Giving A Big High Five

Points To Ponder:

  • Exactly how many abbeys are there? From the dots on David's screen, there appears to be thousands.
  • Bonus points for whoever's job it was to blur out all the naked abbey butts.
  • We didnt see Mrs Fisher's demise. I can only hope it was a horrible painful death.
  • I've said it many times before but Nurse Pam (Melissa Leo) is one the best things about this show. She has gone from creepy nurse with possible ulterior motives to someone who sacrificed her family in order to save the remaining humans.

I Love You Nurse Pam!

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). An excellent, action packed finale. My only gripe is the switcharoo ending but I didnt expect anything less. The show is produced by M Night Shyamalan (who is notorious for such things). Yes, I'm still pissed about "The Village".

All in all, I still really enjoyed the series though and am very pleased I tuned in. There is some buzz about a season 2. I have no idea how they would pull that off (unless they maybe visit some of the settlements that Theresa found evidence of). If Nurse Pam makes another appearance, I'll definitely be back.
