If the Mayans were correct, we only have 25 days left until the end of the world as we know it. My suggestion is hold off on buying Christmas presents until the 22nd. That way if the world does end, you havent wasted time buying presents no one will use.
On December 21, 2012 the "galactic alignment" will occur. This means the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way galaxy for the first time in 26,000 years. What effect, if any, this will have on life on earth remains to be seen. It will probably be another letdown-- like Y2K. I was hunkered in my basement with my years supply of Spam. At 12:01 planes did not fall out of the sky and nuclear power plants did not blow up so I went to sleep.
My guess is the Mayan guy in charge of keeping the calendar ran out of the stone tablets to inscribe and called it a day. It was so far away in the future, he didnt think anyone would notice. Either that or they outsourced calendar inscribing to India. A friend recently told me they found another Mayan calendar so the world does not end on that day. I think she was telling me that to get me to shut up about the end of the world. None the less its fun to think about.
On a related note, has anyone seen Doomsday Preppers on the NatGeo channel:
http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/doomsday-preppers/ Each week it covers seveal families and what they're doing to be prepared. Sure some of them seem a little crazy, but it doesnt hurt to be prepared. Many of them are preparing for a nuclear attack, the collapse of civilization, F5 tornados, bird flu pandemic, etc. You can also get your prep score here: http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/doomsday-preppers/interactives/how-prepped-are-you1/
Im off to buy a gas mask. Stay tuned for more prepper ideas in the future. Where will you be when the SHTF?
