Just finished reviewing a couple episodes I hadn't seen. One difference btwn this and season 2 is, while there is a critique of each prepper, there is no scoring system in season 1. Here's what I learned from season 1:
- If you don't live near an old missile silo, buried cargo containers are the way to go.
- Never put anything in front of the barrel of your gun if you don't want it shot off.
- The "urban foxhole" is a very cool idea.
- Sanitation is one of the last areas most preppers think about. Remember to store solids and liquids separately.
- I need to dig me some spider holes.
- If bugging out in a school bus ya need to black out the windows and disguise it as a prison bus. That is a great idea!
- Re the girl that was going to jog her way out of the city and barter to Mexico, she needs to wear something other than short shorts and a tight tank top when bugging out. I think she needs to be more realistic about who she will be dealing with when the SHTF.
- Salt water can be boiled, turned into condensation, and when it cools, you'll have good drinking water.
- Urine can be purified via charcoal or other purification methods and drank.
- "Redneck Faraday box"- how to make with a steel trash can: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=J19SuEBgrR0&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DJ19SuEBgrR0 Note: it's a two parter.
- Pet food is not regulated by the FDA but you can still eat it to stay alive.
- Mobile prepper travels with his sick wife in their semi. I really like those two.
- SHTF will mean an angry flood of prisoners roaming around. Eekkk!
- Alcohol can be used to disinfect wounds or as an alternative fuel source. Alcohol is also great for bartering.
- Storing food is not enough. You need a resupply plan in order to survive long term.
- The solar storm of 1859 or the Carrington Event was one of the most powerful EMPs in recorded history. Telegraph pylons threw sparks and telegraph paper spontaneously caught fire, in some cases shocking telegraph operators. Telegraphs were the only electrical devices in widespread usage at that time. EMPs will also fry the computers inside automobiles.
- Learning another language to secretly communicate is an interesting idea.
- Honey can be stored indefinitely.
- Train and then train again and after that train again.
- Can use duckweed for feeding livestock or a backup food source.
- Aquaponics for growing food via an old pool. They are fertilized by talapia which they eat daily.
- Bartering with precious metals since cash will be worthless.
- Stock up on potassium iodine pills in case of radioactivity.
- I need to start a seed bank.
- Preppers need to also focus on physical fitness.
- Favorite quotes: "I don't fear, I prepare" and we're only nine meals away from anarchy".
