From Dusk Till Dawn Episodes 7 Thru 10 Recaps: Set Me Free (Season Finale)

And its finally the moment those of us who saw the movie have been waiting for. Santanico Pandemonium performs and all hell breaks loose. Freddie arrives at the bar and stabs Richie in the hand. Santanico turns into a vampire and starts chomping on people. Then everyone else turns into vampires. The doors are locked and all the humans are trapped inside.

Maybe We Should Have Stopped At McDonald's Instead?

Remember Dr Tanner that Freddie consulted with earlier in the series? He's at the bar too. Please call him "Sex Machine" from now on. He has a machine gun strategically placed under a cod piece. Whatever works for ya dude.

Jacob tried to fend off a vampire by using his cross necklace. Instead of being repelled, she eats it. Too funny! Freddie gets bit by a female vamp and then shoved in a hole with all the other bodies. Is that the end of him? I dont think so since he's a main character.

The Geckos and the Fullers discuss what the creatures are. Scott says they're an ancient race of bloodsucking vampires from Aztec or Mayan folklore. Tanner enlightens them saying they are Waxaklahun Ubah Kan (or culebras). They worship the Vision Serpent (which is the strange symbol we have seen several times). The bar is a giant "people juicer". It chews up the bodies and sends them down to the guests below.

We learn more about the culebra mythology. It's a little confusing but here's what I understood. Santanico was turned into a culebra centuries ago by the serpent cult. She cannot leave the bar (which sits on top of an ancient temple). She is a servant of the Nine Lords and must supply them with sacrifices. She hatches a plan for freedom. It involves turning Richie into a vamp.

I'd Love To Be Richie In This Scene (Minus The Bleeding Of Course)?

Richie and Seth must travel to the center of the temple and find her blood in a vault. The only two problems with the plan are 1. the Nine Lords have created a "labyrinth of the mind" to prevent them from succeeding and 2. There are vamps everywhere. During their "test" Seth and Richie envision a failed heist attempt from a colorful guy named "Big Jim". I found that part to be kinda boring.

Dont Call Him Fez

Flashback to Carlos as a Spanish conquistador. He fell in love with Santanico and she turned him into a vampire. But she considers him greedy and weak. Carlos and Freddie fight but neither is killed. It turns out Freddie is from an ancient line of warriors called the "otomi". They are immune to vampire bites (which is why he didnt die earlier). Scott however is not so lucky. Carlos turns him into a culebra.

Meanwhile the Fullers plus Freddie and Sex Machine are wandering around in the temple looking for Scott. Carlos teams up with Narciso (remember they hate each other) to stop the Gecko brothers from setting Santanico free.  Team Fuller gets split up and Sex Machine leads Kate to a sacrificial room. Yep he's an obsessed wierdo. Freddie rescues Kate and kills Sex Machine. Freddie also the serial killer he has been looking for. He mistakenly thought it was Richie.

We learn three interesting tidbits about the characters: 1. We previously thought Jacob was drunk and killed his wife in a car accident. The temple tells Kate that her mother ODed on drugs and then tried to jump out of the car (causing Jacob to wreck). 2. In another flashback we saw Seth and Richard as boys escaping a fire that killed their father. Now we see that Rickie actually killed him instead. 3. After being bitten by Santanico, Richie not only turns into a vampire but can also change into other people.

The Geckos successfully get to the safe. They find an urn which contains a snake. Richie swallows the snake saying "its filled with her blood, she is inside me now". Richie is now the "prince" (whatever that means).

Jacob encounters vampire Scott. He cant kill him. Scott repays Jacob's kindness by biting him. Scott says he was never a real part of their family (since he's adopted). Kate kills Jacob before he can turn into a culebra.

Beer Goggles

Carlos kidnaps Richie and drives off. Santanico tries to stop them. She turns into her usual vamp self but this time she has wings. That's cool. She flies to the door but is knocked back. Remember as part of her curse she cant leave the temple. Seth and Santanico chit chat about what to do. Carlos will return Richie for the $30 million. Why always with the money? Vampires dont need money. They can just bite people and take their money.

Seth brings the money. He and Richie stage a fight. Santanico's "girls" throw spears at Carlos' crew. Who knew strippers were such good shots? Back at the temple, Freddie threatens Richie. He is going home to his family and the vamps better not follow him. They all agree.

It's sunrise. Santanico's followers gather around as the snake inside of Richie bites her. The sun streams through killing them. Richie tells Seth they have to part ways. Seth and Kate drive away together. Richie and Santanico drive off in a separate car. Carlos is sent back into the temple by Narciso to be "reeducated". The end.

There will be a season 2 but almost all the major plot points have been concluded (so not sure what else they could do). I did love the final scene and wish they would have spent longer on it.

Great Final Shot!

Episodes:

Episode 7: Pandemonium
Episode 8: La Conquista
Episode 9: Boxman
Episode 10: The Take

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). The plot and dialogue are all over the place at times. I lost count of how many times they said "Ranger Gonzalez"? But it's good vampire fighting fun so that outweighs the other issues. The retractable fangs were also a great addition.  Will you be watching season 2? I'm not sure if I will. Where else can they go with this show?
