As the story begins, a Russian politician is killed in Vienna. Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh of "Grey's Anatomy" fame) is a low level MI5 admin. Her boss is called in to discuss the case so she goes along. Eve thinks the killer is a woman. Too bad no one else is interested in her insights.
Eve is indeed correct. Villanelle (Jodie Comer) is a previously unknown assassin who jets around the world at her mysterious employer's beck and call. Villanelle seems to enjoy her job and delights in killing victims in novel ways. She also appears to be a psychopath and has no sympathy for those left in her wake.
Eve is fired from her MI5 job after she secretly starts her own investigation. But have no fear. Polastri is recruited by Carolyn Martens (Fiona Shaw) to work for MI6 and help take down Villanelle. Eve's mundane life is about to get MUCH more exciting.
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5) "Killing Eve" turns the spy thriller on it's head but making both the assassin and the agent tracking her women. After watching one episode, I'll definitely be back for more.
The cat and mouse game between the two women should be interesting. At some point we may not be able to tell which person is tracking which. I'd also like to learn more about how Villanelle got where she is today. Eve is also a compelling character. Sandra Oh does a great job of balancing the seriousness of the situation with a dry sense of humor.
Examples: When we're first introduced to Eve she is in bed screaming bloody murder. Her husband Nick awakens her. Is Eve having a nightmare about some dangerous case gone bad? Nope, her arms just fell asleep. Overreact much? Even also at one point asks her long suffering hubbie how he would kill her? She then goes into great detail about how she would "off" him. "I'd paralyze you with saxitoxin and suffocate you in your sleep, chop you into the smallest bits I could manage, boil you down, put you in the blender, then take you to work in a flash and flush you down a restaurant toilet." That guy must really love Eve. I'd sleep with one eye open if I were him (just in case).
And good news. For those looking for more on these two ladies, BBC American has already renewed the show for a season 2.
