Quicksand Review: This Swedish Courtroom Drama Has A Compelling Story

"Quicksand" ('Storst av allt") is a six episode Swedish series. It is NetFlix's first Swedish language original and is based on a book of the same name by Malin Persson Giolito. The creator of the series is Camila Ahlgren. She has quite a pedigree and worked on the original Swedish "Girl With A Dragon Tattoo" (Millennium) trilogy as well as the TV series "The Bridge".

The show opens with a horrific school shooting. The lead character, eighteen year old Maja Norberg, is taken to the hospital. Authorities also collect physical evidence from her body (gun powder residue, etc). This is because Maja appears to be one of the shooters.

The rest of the series follows Maja's trial and flashes back to what lead her to this point. We dont know the specifics of the shooting or Maja's exact role in it until the end.

All of the actors are great. Hannah Ardehl does a great job in the lead role. How does a privileged young girl get involved in this mess? We learn it has something to do with her rich unstable boyfriend Sebastian. I won't give the ending away since you should watch it for yourself.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Don't let the subtitles scare you off. "Quicksand' is definitely worth a watch. The actors are excellent (especially Hannah Ardehl in the lead role). The cinematography is beautiful. The story is a compelling mystery told in a series of flashbacks. And with just six episodes total, it's a super fast watch.
