Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina Season 1 Part 2 Review: Not Today Satan, Not Today!

The nine episodes of part 2 of "The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina" are jam packed. This should go without saying but turn back now if you haven't watched part 2. Here's the highlights:

At  the beginning of the season, Sabrina has a new boyfriend (Nicholas Scratch) and she's attending the Academy of Unseen Arts full time. Meanwhile Roz is now dating Harvey (Sabrina's ex), but she became blind shortly thereafter. Roz has also developed cunning powers. More on that later. Susie is transitioning to Theo and wants to join the boy's basketball team. There is resistance from some of the other players.

Auntie Hilda  has a new boyfriend in Doctor Cerberus. He wears a bracelet in order to keep his inner incubus/wolf in check. Auntie Zelda is getting ready to marry Father Blackwood. Blackwood is an even more despicable character this season and wants only warlocks to be in charge. He believes witches were meant to serve warlocks. He asks Ambrose to join his secret warlock group. Ambrose accepts but I think he's too wise to be fooled by such behavior. We're not sure what happened to his boyfriend Luke. Blackwood also has Zelda under a spell for several episodes. She turns into something akin to a Stepford wife.

Blackwood continues to refuse to recognize his daughter Prudence. She is crushed. As a ploy to win his love, she revealed that Baby Letitla is indeed alive. Blackwood renames her Judith to go along with her twin Judas.

The Anti-Pope is scheduled to visit for the wedding ceremony. Blackwood puts Ambrose in charge of protecting him. Something goes horribly wrong. He is stabbed to death and Ambrose has no memory of what happened. It turns out the familiar that Blackwood gave him was really controlling Ambrose. Blackwood wants the Anti-Pope dead so he can take his place.

Blackwood declares himself he temporary Anti-Pope and says he is instating five tenets that everyone in the coven must live by. This includes warlocks holding positions of powers (but excludes witches). Meanwhile Sabrina, wants the witches to follow her father's tenants which state that both witches and mortals can coexist peacefully.

Some angels (disguised as missionaries) attack the Spelmans and the school. Sabrina dies trying to save the other witches but is resurrected with new powers. No one is sure what she is. To make matters even more confusing Harvey and Theo find a mosaic in Mine #13 that has Sabrina's likeness on it. Is she the Herald of Hell?

The (supposedly good) deeds Sabrina is performing (healing Roz of her blindness, resurrecting, the dead, sacrificing herself, etc) are what is heralding the return of Satan. Oops.

Michelle Gomez as Mrs Wardwell/Madame Satan continues to be one of the highlights of the season. She has a boyfriend (Adam) for a while and appears to be happy. That is until the Dark Lord turns him into a roast and serves the meal to her. Madame Satan is trapped with no escape. We get to see some of her back story.  Lilith (the first woman and witch) meets Lucifer The Morningstar (who has had his wings amputated before he's thrown to Earth). He initially loves her but over time he becomes more and more uncaring. Madame Satan wants to rule by his side but the Dark Lord wants Sabrina instead. She gradually accepts that he has been lying to her all these years. She begins to work with the others to try to defeat Satan. They initially fail miserably.

Going into the finale, the Dark Lord wants Sabrina to blow Gabriel's Horn which will open the gates of Hell. This will then create Hell on Earth (which Lucifer will rule over with Sabrina at his side). And in the biggest shocker of the season we find out Sabrina is also the Dark Lord's daughter. Say what? This situation is all kinds of wrong.

Blackwood high tails it out of town with the twins. This is not before he poisons most of the coven. Prudence manages to save the other Weird sisters and they join the Spellmans in their fight to stop the end of the world. They will all do whatever it takes to protect their family.

Sabrina first captures the Dark Lord in Edward's device from earlier in the season. But it doesnt hold. They eventually trap Lucifer by forcing him into Nicholas' body. Lilith then takes the crown from Sabrina and heads through the gates of Hell. She will rule there and make sure Satan/Nicholas dont go anywhere.

And since Faustus is gone, the survivors rename the church to the Church of Lilith and Zelda becomes the High Priestess. Prudence vows to kill her father and Ambrose agrees to help. Sabrina has her powers back now thanks to Lilith. The "real" Mrs Wardswell has returned as well. Great! I want Michelle Gomez to stay on this show forever.

And in the final scene, Sabrina asks Theo, Roz and Harvey to go back into Hell and rescue her boyfriend. The only problem is he of course has the Dark Lord imprisoned inside of him AND they have to get around Lilith. Good luck with that kids!

Grade: 4 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). A great second half of the season. There are some great twists and turns. I initially thought "CAOS" would be too "CW" for me but the show deals with some surprisingly dark themes. They dont shy away from whom/what the witches are really worshiping.

Aunties Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto) continue to be great fun to watch. Richard Coyle is delightful as the dastardly Faustus Blackwood. Michelle Gomez is a standout as Madame Satan. The show has already been renewed for a season 2. I cant wait til see more of my favorite witches.
