Helix Season 2 Epi 7 Review: Brother Michael Is A Despicable Person

In "Cross Pollination' we first visit France in 1601. Michael falls in love with a peasant girl but she loves another. So Michael kills the woman and her lover by burning down their house. Michael has been working working on a serum made from apples for the last 400 years. It will cause mortal men to become infertile. Michael would then be the only one capable of fathering children. This also solves Ilaria's problem without killing all of the humans (which is good but I still think Michael could benefit from some therapy).  We learn all this because Mme Durant (the French immortal girl) shares it with Julia. Julia is now off to St Germaine Island. Not sure how that will work since when we first caught up with Julia it was some 30 years in the future.

A Bit Of Advice Michael: Listen To Some Sad Songs, Eat A Lot Of Ice Cream & Cry It Out Like The Rest Of Us. No Need to Make Everyone On The Planet Infertile.

In the present time, Amy tells Michael people are scared and talking about leaving the island. He gathers everyone in the mess hall. Olivia and crew have hidden most of the sick so its only a matter of time before they all go crazy. Michael tells his followers they must stay in the dining room until the situation is resolved. The news is not warmly received.

New BFFs

Meanwhile Poor Peter is still in the hole. He is now joined by Anne. Remember Amy framed Anne by putting tainted honey in her coat. Poor stupid Anne is still obedient to Michael. Doesnt it make you want to punch her in the face?

Alan is having flashbacks and doesnt remember what he did the previous night. Last week Landry slipped him some crazy eyes gas. Alan then tried to strangle Sarah. Alan tells Kyle he may know where Sara is.

Sarah awakens. It appears her baby has been removed. She tries to escape the building but runs into several of the infected. Two children are hiding in a room. Their father killed their mother and he's after them next. Sarah tries to lead them to safety. Of course she has to stop and tell the young boy a story. Once upon a time... we all got killed! Now move it people!  The psycho father shows up. Luckily Alan whacks him the head. The guy dies. It is now only taking 36 hours until the infected die.

I Would Like To Be Infertile Too Please

Amy approaches Michael in the lab. She doesnt want to sleep with him. Michael says he knew what Amy was up to all along-- what she was doing with Landry and how she framed her mother. Michael plans to kill everyone on the island. "I'm thinking of a pure community this time. No outsiders, just family...You are going to be the mother to a whole new generation... Of all my daughters you've always been my favorite." He then locks her in a room with a bunch of toxic plants. Amy better be putting out soon or else. Oh and Kyle sees the whole exchange because he's hiding in the book shelves. He doesnt bother to free Amy though.

The Fetus Has Been Baby-Napped

Alan performs an ultrasound on Sarah. There is no sign of the baby. Alan confesses to Sarah that he was drugged and "might" be the one who took the baby. She is VERY upset and tells Alan she cant stand to look at him. That reaction from Sarah seems harsh but whatever. We have to ratchet up the soap opera moments.

Meanwhile back in the dining area, Michael tells everyone that the CDC has created a cure. It is distributed to everyone in cups. What they dont know is it's Monk's Hood flower and will kill them. Malcolm is distrustful. Michael drinks it first to assure him (but of course Michael is immortal).

Don't Drink The Kool Aid

The little boy who Sarah helped earlier is now wearing a towel as a cape (thanks to her story). He spills his cup, then looks up to see everyone dying. Minutes earlier Kyle had helped Peter and Anne escape the hole. They try in vain to get into the dining hall but it's locked. It appears most of the people have died (but remember Landry and some men are still outside). Michael finds the little boy on the floor. I thought he might let him live. Instead he gives him another cup to drink. The boy drinks it (and I assume dies). Geez Brother Michael is a despicable person!

Favorite Quotes:
  • "Have you seen my budding knife?"- Michael to Amy.
  • Malcolm: "What about the sick. Do we just leave them out there to die?" Michael: "Yes unless we all want to die along with them".
  • "When a disease attacks the roots, changes are necessary"- Michael to the Wall of Portraits.
  • "Nothing like a road trip through Ratville to build character."- Peter after spending time in the hole.
  • "Try working with your family. It's the worst"- Sister Anne to Peter (who wholeheartedly agrees).
  • "Amy is following her path...If this is my final journey I have no one to blame but myself."- Anne to Peter. Grow a backbone lady!
  • "I know what you are. You're not a god. You're not a freak of nature. My path does not lead to your side or to your bed"- Amy.
  • "Sometimes sacrifices are necessary"- Michael.
  • "I'm thinking of a pure community this time, no outsiders, just family...You are going to be the mother to a whole new generation...Of all my daughters you've always been my favorite."

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A great episode that was jam packed with twists. Here's a few thoughts:
  • Alan took Sarah's baby. Say what? Does Amy/Landry think they can use it to become immortal? Or did Michael take it? Is there any chance it's still alive? I thought that Caleb was Sarah/Alan's love child so this might blow my theory.
  • Did you notice that Michael's 1600s wife looked a lot like Sarah? Remember when Michael asked Sarah if they had met previously. Hmmm.
  • Michael's first wife's name started with an "a". All his other daughter/wives also had an "a" name. How many more are there before he has to move on to "b" names?
  • I had hopes Amy might escape the island but that's looking pretty grim now. My wish for the end of the season is that Amy becomes immortal, kills Michael and takes over the island.
  • I still dont understand the bloody teeth. Sarah found a tooth on the ground this week. We previously saw people's teeth being pulled. Michael tells Amy she will do what he says "with or without teeth". I'm confused as usual.
  • Will Julie be able to save anyone-- Ilaria, humanity, herself? And what is Hatake up to these days? Where is Caleb and the sword?
  • I have learned a new vocabulary word this week: "cuckold" means "the husband of an adulterous wife". In biological terms it refers to "a male who is investing resources to raise offspring that is not genetically his".
  • We have five episodes to go till the end of the season so anything could (and probably will) happen.
