Helix Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Madam I Believe Theres An EyeBall In My Soup

Last week Michael lost his head (after killing most of his congregation), Amy declared herself Queen, and the mycotics were still roaming freely about the island.

This week's episode entitled "Ectogenesis" opens with two of the infected having lunch. The man (Kyle) complains about the woman (Carol's) cooking. She puts a bowl of something disgusting in front of him. He throws it to the floor and we see an eyeball. Yuck, I just lost my appetite.

Love Birds

Anne tries to console the remaining survivors but that doesnt last long. Amy comes stomping in. Everyone rejects Anne for Amy. That ungrateful brat. We next see Anne on the roof. Is she going to jump? Peter talks her down. Will Peter and Anne make a love connection? Maybe but it will have to wait. Peter's satellite phone (I assume) starts downloading messages from Ilaria. Julia and Sergio arrive on the island. They want Anne to give them whatever Michael was working on that makes men infertile (thus saving humanity from being destroyed by Ilaria). Peter says he will give them it if Ilaria will: 1. Grant him immunity; and 2. Give him $100 million. Peter didnt you learn from your last encounter that the immortals are not to be trifled with? It turns out the tree (named "Mother") is MIA. Next week's episode is "Mother" so I'm sure we'll find out more about it then. Plus we know Julia doesnt get it because she comes back to the island 30 years later looking for it.

It Always Does Alan, It Always Does

The Coast guard team, Alan, and Kyle are searching the woods for a tree with red sap that might hold the cure to the infection. Alan gets whacked in the head by a log. Doreen makes an appearance while he's out. I've missed you Doreen. I wish you'd come back as a regular. Maybe you could play a twin sister named Noreen...just a thought. Anyway, Doreen tells Alan he needs to protect Kyle and that Kyle reminds Alan of a younger version of himself. When Alan wakes up they find one of the soldiers hanging from a tree with his eyeballs gauged out. So that's where the soup came from.

Dont Lay A Finger On My Freaky Fetus

Sarah tries to get her immortal baby but Amy and Landry sneak up on her. Side Note: the title of the episode is "ectogenesis" which means an artificial womb (like the one the baby immortal is in). Amy threatens to break the container and kill the fetus if Sarah doesnt make her immortal. Sarah hesitates because she's never made anyone immortal. Amy wants it done NOW. Sarah talks Amy through doing a spinal tap on her. But Sarah's plan to switch the syringes and kill Amy is foiled. Instead Landry is made immortal (I think). SERIOUSLY??? That wet blanket is going to be around for all eternity? Oh the humanity!

Poor Kyle. He's captured by the freakish Bickermans (with help from an eyeball bandaged Soren). They discuss eating Kyle. He then turns the tables by saying to each that the other wants his eyeballs all or themselves. Carol had previously told Kyle that they wont eat anyone who is infected. As a last stitch effort to survive, Kyle eats the tainted honey. Good plan... or not. If he could have held out a few minutes longer Alan would have arrived to rescue him. Kyle better be finding that "bleeding tree" soon (it's sap keeps the mycotics alive).

Favorite Quotes:

  • "Cant, never, those are self defeating words"- Amy to Sarah when Sarah says she cant make Amy immortal.
  • "You seem to be a man in search of a mission."- dead Doreen to Alan.
  • "You dont have it do you?"- Julia to Peter about the infertility project Michael was working on.
  • "The eyes are the best part"- Carol the mycotic to Kyle.
  • "She's gone. Mother's gone."- Anne.
  • "We better find that tree within two days or I'm a dead man"- Kyle to Allen after eating the honey.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I personally dont care about the mycotic story line much. I'm far more interested in the immortals. And the mycotic cannibal couple just seemed silly. Dont we have enough plots already on "Helix" without adding cannibals? I'm holding out for an Amy smackdown by the end of the season. If that happens, I'll consider season 2 of "Helix" worth my while.
