Colony Episodes 3-4 Reviews: Well, I Didn't See That Coming!

"USA Network" just renewed "Colony" for a season 2 so the Occupation wont be ending any time soon. The show doesn't show any signs of slowing down though. The last two episodes ("98 Seconds" and "Blind Spot") provided a number of surprising reveals.

Katie is thoroughly entrenched with the Resistance. She goes on what I think is a meaningless mission. Dont they already know how long it takes for the drones to show up? It's exactly 98 seconds (hence the title of the episode). One of the Resistance members dies (along with lots of civilians and Red Hats). Katie freaks out and has hot bathroom sex with Will. He still trusts her completely. She feeds what he says about work to the Resistance in exchange for them not harming Will.

Meanwhile son Bram secretly makes tapes of a Resistance supporter. His tag line is "I am Geronimo, you are Geronimo, we are Geronimo". Bram passes the recordings along to his teacher. Gracie's "at home tutor" still rubs me the wrong way. I'm calling it now people. She's a big old spy!!!

Pia, a girl from Bram's class, asks him to folow her. They enter an abandoned building. Pia and her cousin have been going outside the wall. The structures are still there but all the people are gone. The plot thickens. How many people are left on the planet?

Will learned that Phyllis has access to something called "the Rolodex". It's apparently a database with info on citizens from before the Arrival. Phyllis also tells Will there are a number of small Resistance cells working to overthrow the Hosts. Each has their own agenda and is independent of the others. Hmmm, sounds familiar.

In an surprising twist, we learn that Resistance member Broussard actually works for the Red Hats. We follow him as his squad breaks into a school and hauls away a teacher away for reading "Fahrenheit 451". They also beat down anyone that questions them (including school kids).

Meanwhile Katie's sister Maddie applies to a job in the Green Zone working for Charlotte (an art dealer). She is "reclaiming" (ie stealing) art from various homes nearby. Maddie makes a good impression and Charlotte hires her. Maddie, as you will recall is trying to do anything possible to get insulin for her son. I fear that "anything" will involve having sexy times with Charlotte's husband (who seemed very interested in the new arrival).

The Resistance fake-fire-bombs the Bowman house in order to get Katie into Homeland Security headquarters. Katie heads to TA where she meets privately with Phyllis. At first, its a friendly conversation but it quickly becomes tense. Eventually Katie thinks she's gotten away undetected.

Phyllis tells Will the Red Hats discovered Bram's stash of the Geronimo tapes. He asks her to please not process the evidence. He has a father/son chat with Bram and it looks like he's scared straight.. for a while. Phyllis says she has destroyed the tapes but I dont believe her.

Katie arrives to open the bar. She is surprised by Phyllis. Phyllis confesses she cheated on her husband before the Arrival. She then shows Katie a picture of herself with the Resistance fighter that was killed last week. Phyllis tells Katie she shouldnt trust the Resistance. They are just using her and dont have her best interest at heart. She says "You work for me now". I thought this was how the episode would end. But wait... there's more.  Thanks to Katie's intel, Broussard puts a bullet in Phyllis and her vegetative husband. Wow. I definitely didnt see that coming. Who was she talking to on the phone before she was killed? She said "Their perception of time makes that unpredictable". Is she talking about humans or aliens?

The Resistance radio broadcaster is discovered. We all know he's not the "real" Geronimo. That person is apparently hiding in the Green Zone. Wouldnt it have been cool if Phyllis turned out to be Geronimo? Well, probably not now since she's D-E-A-D.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Two very good episodes. I'm liking "Colony" more each week. I I thought most of the season would focus on Phyllis slowly learning what Katie (and Will) were up to. Instead, Phyllis cornered Katie this week. Was this the setup for Phyllis to become the Big Bad? Nope. Instead she bites the big one. Nicely played "Colony"! Nicely played.  I'm not sure where the show will go next (which is a very good thing). There are only 10 episodes in season 1 so we're almost halfway through.
