The X-Files Season 10 Episode 4 Review: Trash Talk

After an absolutely hilarious episode last week, "The X-Files" settles down to it's typical "Monster of the Week" (MOTW) format. Mulder and Scully are on the case as a number of people are ripping limb from limb. Trash Man (AKA Band Aid Nose Man) is killing people that are mean to the homeless? Why does he have a band aid on his nose that he always leaves behind? Where does he get a new band aid each time? Inquiring minds want to know. Additionally, I'm not sure this is the kind of of advertising that Band Aid adhesive strips is looking for.

On the home front, Dana's mom Margaret has a heart attack. Scully rushes to the hospital. While sitting with her mother, Scully has a flashback to when she was in a coma and Fox was at her side. Mulder joins Scully to provide support. Dana is able to get estranged brother Charlie on phone to speak to their comatose mom. Mrs Scully awakens. She asks about William (the alien baby Dana and Fox gave away). And with that, Margaret promptly dies. Scully falls apart. The partners discuss William and if they made the right decision. .

Scully heads back to work to keep her mind off of things. They track down Trash Man. The clay creature is a street artist's creation. He's referred to as a "tulpa" (from Tibetan Buddhism). A "golem" is basically the same idea. He's not really alive or dead (but somewhere in between). For some reason, while chasing Trash Man, Dana thinks back to giving birth to William. I'm not sure how these two are related. After knocking off the last of the homeless-hating-city-officials, Trash Man disappears. He's replaced by a big happy face. The end.

X Files Trivia:

  • "Home Again" is not related to the earlier episode entitled "Home". It was about deformed inbreds who avenge their mom (who lived under the bed). If you haven't seen the episode, please do. It is THE most disturbing episode of the entire series IMHO.
  • "Home Again" (as well as "Home") were written and directed by Glen Morgan. He also brought us "Intruders" (which was my favorite show of 2014). See here: Top 10 Television Shows Of 2014. I'm still highly upset there was no season 2.

Favorite Quotes:

  • Mulder: "Dana, after all you've seen, after all the evidence, why can't you believe?" Scully: "I'm afraid. I'm afraid to believe."
  • Scully to Mulder: "I want to believe, I need to believe that we didnt treat him like trash."
  • "Does he ever get scared and wish I was there?"- Dana to Fox.
  • "I dont care about the big questions right now Mulder."- Scully.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). The "Monster of the Week" was scary. His exit via the back of a garbage truck was a fun visual. I'm just not sure both parts of the episode (Trash Man vs Margaret's death) worked well together though. None the less, excellent work by Gillian Anderson (as Scully deals with her mother's death). Anderson can do no wrong in my book. If there is any justice in the world, she'll get an Emmy nom for "Home Again".
