Another great "Defiance" episode. Here's the episode highlights:- A body is found walled up in the Need/Want. Who is it? Why its Hunter Bell (the previous tavern owner and dead husband of Kenya). An investigation by Nolan and Tommy ensues. Kenya and Amanda are acting suspiciously. Turns out hubby was not a very nice guy and beat Kenya. There's a motive if I ever saw one. Next Jared (the Liberata bartender) is murdered. Maybe Datak is the killer. He's always threatening to kill someone anyway. There are lots of flashbacks about various town folks dealings with Hunter. At one point Rafe even saved Datak in a fight with him. My, how times have changed,
- Meanwhile Christie and Alak are planning their wedding but there are lots of hurdles to overcome. We find out Rafe is not leaving the mines to Christie. It's going to the Irathis instead. That's it. The wedding is canceled. Datak tries to keep them from marrying but Alak, Rafe and Stahma all ignore him and proceed with the plans. This is the first time we've seen Stahma defy Datak to his face. You go girl. Stahma also tried to give Christie a metal helmet (a teelo) that prevents her from seeing. Apparently Casti brides are supposed to stay in the dark until their husbands help them "see the light". Uh no. I don't think so. When Christie doesn't want to wear that (who could blame her), Stahma makes her a lovely bridal veil instead. I know Stahma is as mean as a snake but I still think she wants her son and daughter-in-law to be happy.
- On her way to the wedding, Nicki stops in to see the Doc. In a flashback we see she is... Wait for it... She is an Indogene. I honestly did not see that coming. She is the one that actually killed Hunter because he found out. Then she killed poor Jared because he saw her kill Hunter. On an up note, spoilertv says the actor who plays Jared (Jessica Nichols) plays all the Liberata on the show. How cool is that? Anyway Yewell then kills Nicki because she's gone #^%€ crazy. She makes it look like a suicide and leaves a note. Oh I didn't see that coming either. Yewell is now in possession of the gold thingy (the Kaziri) which she locks away in a box. We still don't know what Nicki and Doc were originally planning but it was something big (insert genocide here).
- Best quote of the show: Datak says something to Rafe about how his pink meat sickens Datak. Rafe then says "Does this look pink to you?" Then Datak says you all look alike. Nothing like a racist (or is it speciesist) alien to make us think differently about ourselves.
- Lots of subtext between Kenya and Stahma but ill leave that for another time.
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). This was one of my favorite episodes. I'm surprised they killed off Nicki though. She was a fun villain. I really hope we see more of Yewell in upcoming episodes. She is fast becoming my favorite (after Stahma). No one can ever take the place of Stahma!!! Only two episodes to go till the end of season one.
