Wayward Pines Episode 2 Review: Well, I Didnt See That Coming

I'm still here "Wayward Pines" so you must be doing something right. Keep it up! Episode 2 "Dont Discuss Your Life Before" picks up right where the premiere ended. Pope (the ice cream eating sheriff) tells Burke he cant leave. They're still on the outskirts of town. Some teenagers bike by and say "Dont try to leave Mr Burke. That's rule number 1". Pope tells Burke to stay put at the hotel. Of course that lasts all of five seconds.

If No Planes Fly Over Wayward Pines, How Did We Get This Pictures? Satellite? Drone? Hot Air Balloon?

Burke visits Kate at her toy store. He tells her all the money in town is counterfeit and nothing is newer than 1980 something. Add this to the list of other strange stuff including.... Beverly says she never seen a plane fly overhead. Time does not pass the same in Wayward Pines. Beverly thinks its 2000 (which would make her 54). Kate thinks she's been in town for 12 years. She and her hubby started their business eight years ago (but that is not true since she's only been missing a few weeks). And what was it about the cars? There are no newer models as well?

Next Ethan tries to call the Seattle Secret Service Bureau. A woman identifies herself as the receptionist but obviously she's not. I suspect she's Nurse Pam. Dr Jenkins (remember we saw in Seattle talking to Agent Hassler last week) is trying to get chummy with Burke. I dont trust that guy as far as I can throw him.

Ethan visits Bill's widow. She says Evans was not a Secret Agent. He instead mowed lawns. They were married for a year (which again cant be true because he's only been missing a few weeks). And he was not murdered. Bill instead committed suicide. She knows because she saw it. OK then...

Bill, You Look Pretty Dead (And Moldy) To Me

Burke heads to the Wayward Pines mortuary where Evans body has been taken. He finds the papers that Burke saw last week (in Evan's shoe). There's a map of town. What did the guy do, count all the trees? Burke confides in Beverly. They travel to the cemetery (which apparently is a safe zone). Beverly helps remove a microchip from Ethan's leg. That's how "they" track everyone in town-- whoever "they" are.

Kate, You Are Not A Very Good Dinner Hostess!

Ethan and Beverly head over to Kate and her hubby's house. On the way they discuss their plans to escape. We know something bad is about to happen. At dinner Beverly breaks one of the rules and mentions her daughter. She excuses herself and leaves. Burke follows closely behind. I thought Kate was trying to help Burke last week but I guess not. Dont trust her Ethan!

And in the shocker of the episode, all the phones start ringing simultaneously. Beverly says "Oh my God, this is how it started when they killed Bill". Beverly and Ethan separate. Dont you know that's always a bad idea? All the residents are outside with black clothes, flashlights and baseball bats. They capture Beverly and drag her to the town square. They string her up. Pope makes a speech and then slices her throat while most of the residents applaud. Luckily, a few look shocked. Well, I definitely didnt see that coming. Now Beverly (ie Juliette Lewis) has more time to spend on "Secrets & Lies"... unless this is NOT the end of her on "Wayward Pines".  Who knows with this crazy story.

RIP Beverly. I Guess No One Ever Told Her That Loose Lips Sink Ships

Meanwhile Theresa is back in Seattle  still searching for her husband. She talks to Agent Hassler but I think he's at least partially responsible for Ethan's current predicament. Remember we saw him talking to Dr Jenkins.Theresa and sonny decide to make a visit to Idaho to see if they can locate Burke. We know from the next week's previews that they run into Pope. Uh oh.

I wont even try to explain the show at this point but here's a few points to ponder:

  • We cant entirely rule out that all this is hallucination and the result of Burke's head injury. Remember he saw his family on the gurneys. I'm not sure what that means.
  • If its not a hallucination, are they in some sort of prison camp? It seems to be inside a volcano from the aerial shots
  • I continue to enjoy Nurse Pam immensely. That line about Burke trying to call his wife and wanting to "bang her" was delightfully bizarre. And her walking around with scratches on her face from his first altercation with Ethan is a funny visual. I hope we find out in the finale that Nurse Pam was in charge of everything all along.
  • Is there something supernatural going on? What about aliens? Aliens are usually behind this sort of thing.

I Love You Nurse Pam!

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Extra points to you "Wayward Pines" for killing off who I thought would be a main character. Now poor Ethan is truly on his own. Keep ratcheting up the crazy and I'll be hanging around to see how it all ends.
