"Zero Day" opens on the one year anniversary of the Arrival. At a nighttime ceremony people release balloon lanterns to remember dead loved ones. It's all very beautiful until the Red Hats show up and start shooting people. The next morning Will and Beau view the carnage. There are lots of dead on both sides. The LA bloc could explode into violence again any second.
Over in the Green Zone, Maddie sets Charlotte up. Apparently the aliens really like artwork and dont appreciate Charlotte's black market dealings. She's carted away. Nolan does nothing to save her. Snyder is his boss so he's definitely not getting in the middle of this. Plus this is the plan he suggested to Maddie a while back anyway.
We get some excellent views of the city when Will, Beau and the Red Hats storm a skyscraper. Great scene since we hadnt see the damage from that high up before.
Katie is introduced to some new Resistance conspirators (BB and Morgan). We already met Eckhardt. Eric calls Katie his partner and says he trusts her with his life. I'm not sure I buy this from a bad ass like Broussard... but whatever. We learn that they have been gathering intelligence through the use of a drone disguised as a bee. Pretty sneaky. I like it!
Katie discovers Gracie is reading the "Alien Bible" courtesy of weirdo Lindsay. Bram checks the book out as well. All we can see a drawing of a little girl being beamed up. I'm still going with the theory that the children will become a nice alien buffet. Kate says "Dont ever believe anybody who tells you that what we're dealing with here is benign". My thoughts exactly. Katie and Bram share a tender moment. Katie makes him promise to keep her secret (she's going out for the night) and gives him a number to case of emergency.
Will and Katie finally have it out. He says he knows she's been spying on him for some time. She says she did it to protect the family. He calls bullshit. Can these two learn to work together or has their marriage been irreparably damaged? The husband/wife dynamic is at the heart of "Colony". It's one of the main reasons I keep coming back for more. Well, that and the mystery...and the aliens. Kudos to Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies for their excellent work as the battling Bowmans.
Will and Beau have come up with a plan. They've convinced Snyder that they need to use the tunnel under the wall (the one Bram found) to track the Resistance in the old city. Beau with smuggle Katie and the kids out. They'll travel to his cabin in Big Bear. Will will rescue Charlie and meet them later. There are only three problems that I see with this plan: 1. I'm still not sure we can trust Beau; 2. Does Big Bear even still exist; and 3. Katie refuses to go. She wants to stay and keep fighting. This seems foolhardy to me. Isnt trying to get your kids out of town a better idea in the short term? Will tells Beau to escape while he can. Beau says "Doesn't matter what a man has if he doesnt have purpose." Does that mean Beau will hang around to help the Bowmans fight the enemy?
Katie goes off to attack the metro station where "Hyperion" (the Host big wig) is scheduled to arrive (in order to do Proxy Snyder's review). Katie has turned into quite a crack shot. They lay the bomb on the tracks ans run for cover. There is a BIG explosion. Apparently the newbies arent very good with C4 (since they were just supposed to knock the car off the tracks). Team Broussard enter the charred train car. Amongst the dead Red Hats is a creature in a space suit. He appears to only have three very long fingers. I presume he's dead. Is this Hyperion? And if so, what does he really look like? Does the suit mean the aliens cant survive in an oxygen environment?
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5) Next week is the season finale. Any guesses as to what will happen? I'm seriously hoping we get to see what the alien looks like. And yes, we know "Colony" will be back (since it's already renewed).
