Black Lightning Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Rise Of The Green Light Babies

After a stellar freshman season, DC's"Black Lighning" is back on the CW and ready for action. See my previous reviews here

After barely surviving the vicious battle at the cabin, the Pierce family is safe and back home. But of course there's lot of issues to deal with. Jefferson is blamed for not being at Garfield High during the recent wave of violence (and the attack by Painkiller/Khalil). Uh the dude was shot at, killed and resurrected.. so give him a break. Jefferson reluctantly agrees to resign as principal in order to keep the school open.

Jefferson reveals himself to bestie Bill Henderson.  Let's be honest, he had already figured it out anyway. It's just a pair of goggles people! I still dont know if Henderson can be trusted though. Now he knows about both Lightning and Thunder.

Speaking of Thunder, Anissa takes matters into her own hands. The families of the pod kids need a lot of money in order to sue the government to release them. In a great fight scene, Anissa shows up at a drug  house, beats up everyone and then takes their money to the church. Much more of this please!

Another fun fight scene is Kara vs Synoid in the parking garage. I was surprised Synoid ended up dead (via a high heel to the neck). It looks like Kara is a goner too after Tobias harpoons her but that jump out the window probably means she'll be seen again.

Lynn keeps trying to help the pod people but is thwarted at most every turn. She won't give up though. The police are using the Green Light epidemic in Freeland as a reason to beat and  kill unarmed black kids.

Jennifer is having a very difficult time. She accidentally hurts Lynn. That poor girl is going through a lot. It's bad enough being a teenager without having to deal with some unknown (and currently uncontrollable) power. Great scene with Lightning absorbing the energy bumble she created with Anissa and Lynn giving emotional support.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I'm continuing to love "Black Lightning". It's not afraid to turn the focus on real life matters-- such as the drug epidemic, police brutality, Black Live Matter, etc. Not only do we have superheros fighting bad guys, but we have a family that truly loves and supports each other (which I'm sure will turn out to be their greatest strength).
