Wynonna Earp Season 3 Review: In The End, Love Always Wins (Even When It Looks Like It Doesnt)

Last year's season finale had Wynonna giving birth of Alice Michelle. The baby was then hurried out of the Ghost River Triangle to Aunt Gus (in order to save her from the Earp curse). See my previous review here

Season 3 greatly expands the Earp mythology. There's so much going on, it's hard to figure out where to start.

We meet Wynonna and Waverly's mom Michelle. She has been voluntarily imprisoned in a mental facility for years. Wynonna knew where she was all along. This later causes trust issues with Waverly. It turns out Michele was trying to keep a demon named Jolene (played by "Lost Girl" alum Zoe Palmer) away from Waverly. In a delightfully fun episode, Jolene controls everyone through the use of baked goods. Alas, Jolene was gone too soon. I wish we could have spent more time with her.

Michelle spends Christmas with the girls . Then she's off again to look for her lost love Julian. Unfortunately Mama Michelle isnt very reliable though she means well.

In one of the most shocking events of the season, Dragon Dolls is killed in episode 2 while trying to protect Wynonna. The group deals with his loss as best they can (but it's super sad). Jeremy joins the team and helps with his sciency knowledge. He later gets a boyfriend named Robin. We learn Doc has a secret wife named Contessa/Kate (who is a vampire). Contessa turns Doc into one as well.

I'm SUPER happy to report that my favorite TV ship WayHaught is intact and going strong. Nicole turns out to be the sole survivor of the Cult of Balshar (proving there is much more to her back story). Hopefully we'll learn more about her soon. Speaking of Waverly, a big surprise is revealed. As I had guessed last year, Waverly is indeed an angel. Well, she is actually half angel. Doc suffers from angel blood lust and sucks Charlie dry (thus killing him). Waverly resurrects Julian and learns the truth.

Her mother Michelle had a thing with Julian (who is the angel assigned with protecting the Garden of Eden). To make matters even more interesting, Julian turns out to be Charlie (yes, the guy Wynonna is dating). He had amnesia and didnt know his true identity. Things are going to be very complicated at the Earp house this holiday.

The big baddie this year is again Balshar Clootie. He is, in reality, the Serpent from the Garden of Eden and intends to start the apocalypse. Please get rid of this dude once and for all. He's overstayed his welcome in a big way.

Mercedes is back bitches! She has been revived from her coma. Her face was badly scarred thanks to the Widows (but Waverly inadvertently heals her). While Mercedes declares her love for Wynonna but she's not about to die a second time... for anyone.

During the final battle with Bulshar and his army, Wynonna gathers the Revenants together. She gives a rousing speech that ends with "Anyone wanna go break a Goddamn curse?" I had never thought about it but the revenants are trapped by the curse just as much as the Earps. Evern with the undead's help, the group is still severley outnumbered.

Bobo (who is now Bulshar's lieutenant) stabs Julian with a sword. Julian's powers were weakened after healing Nicole's gunshot wound. This time Waverly is not able to resurrect him. Waverly in turn kills Bobo (as he had asked her to do). I still dont understand that guy.

Wynonna and Waverly sneak off to confront Bulshar alone.  Waverly (ie the Chosen One) gives Wynonna the sword that was previously peacekeeper (and declares her the Guardian). It glows and Wynonna uses it to stab Bulshar. But not before he bites her. The dude is a snake after all. Luckily Doc arrives and sucks the poison from her.

The world is saved for now. But, as predicted, the price is very high. Wynonna has lost the one thing she loves most in the world (her sister). Waverly is pulled through Eden's door by an evil tree. Doc goes up after her. No, I dont know how that works. I thought immortals couldnt go up the steps. Not sure how that works with vampires.

Wynonna heads into Purgatory and sees "Valdez" scratched on a wall. Nedley says they are the only two people left. Everyone else has been taken somewhere (maybe to the Garden?. And end scene.  The Earp curse has been broken (I think) but there's plenty of other problems to solve--- ike rescuing Waverly, Doc, and the rest of the town folk. Also Wynonna could be in an alternate universe and not realize it.  We'll see. And if we know anything about Wynonna, it's that she never gives up... especially on her sister.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I'm still loving "Wynonna Earp". Sure the mythology is a bit wonky at times. But this show has more heart than anything else on television. I love the relationship between the Earp sisters. I also love their interactions with their chosen family.

Have no fear fans. We arent learning the Earps anytime soon. "Wynonna Earp has already been renewed for a season 4.
