The Purge Episode 6 Review: Have You Survived Purge Night Up To This Point?

USA's 'The Purge" series is over half way through. We're six episodes in and there are 10 total. See my initial reviews here I know some have abandoned ship due to the pace of the show. It is true that the TV series is much slower than the movies. However, I'm more interesting in learning how the Purge affects the participant's day to day lives. So I'm still all in.  Thus far, all our main characters are still alive and kicking. Not sure we'll be able to say the same by the end though.

Purge cult member Penelope is captured and sold at the Carnival Of Flesh. Miguel trails her there. A man from their past (Henry) has purchased the girl and plans to torture and kill her. In a flashback we learn that Penelope and Henry were dating. Miguel didnt like that Henry was a drug dealer and got his sister hooked. Miguel severely beat Henry (causing him to lose an eye). As punishment, Miguel goes into the Marines (instead of jail) . Penelope gets involved in the cult while in rehab. Miguel eventually gets the best of Henry (who spends WAY to much time talking about killing them instead of actually doing it). After some close calls, Miguel and Penelope manage to escape.

Jane has made it to her boss David Ryker's house to try to stop his assassination (which she paid for). This turns out to be a very bad plan as she finds the would-be killer dead in a tub. David got to her first. He is also hosting a party. The theme is "Let's All Degrade Women". OK, I made that part up... but that's the gist of it. I'm sure she's wondering at this point why she even tried to stop his murder. Jane should have stayed with the Matron Saints.

Rick and Jenna escape the NFFA party and run all the way home. There's trouble in paradise though. Jenna says she doesnt know Rick (since he was about to shoot a guy at the party). Rick reminds her that he grew up dirt poor and will do whatever he has to to protect Jenna and their unborn daughter. It seems Rick is much more invested in the relationship than Jenna. She still has feelings for Lila. This is going to be interesting as who do you think is beating on their door at the end of the episode? Yep, it's Lila. My guess is either Rick or Lila will kill each other by the end of the season.

Joe is still driving around in his truck. We see in a flashback that he's just a hard working blue collar guy. His factory (Saticoy) was shut down without notice and now he can't pay his bills. His wife also split and his father is sick. Joe is having a hard time. He's resorting to listening to Purge motivational tapes (which encourage him to kill). Who are these people on his list? The next picture we see is Jane. How does he know her? And is he going to protect her or kill her? Joe seems like a good guy but the jury is still out.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). All in all, I'm still liking the show. Sure the story is a bit slow but that gives us time to become attached to the main characters. "The Purge" also has some interesting things to say about our society. The poor, women and minorities unfortunately pay the biggest price.
