SuperGirl Season 4 Episode 1 Review: American Alien
"SuperGirl" is back on the CW this week and she's very busy. Superman is off world in Argo. That leaves her to fly around the globe saving innocent people at every turn. At the beginning of the episode she says "For the first time in my life, I have everything under control'. Uh oh, we know bad things are about to happen.
As you'll recall from last year's finale, Mon-El and Winn are in the future. Alex is now the director of the DEO. J'Onn is taking a break. Braniac 5 is working with the DEO. Brainy and Alex bump heads as he's not versed yet on the etiquette of human interaction.
The brother and sister duo of Mercy and Otis Graves are up to something. We're not initially sure what. Lena and James are in a relationship. James is later revealed to the public as Guardian. The authorities are trying to bring a case against James due to his vigilantism. Lena visits her step mom in prison to get help for James. What else is Lena up to? You can never tell with the Luthors.
One of the things I really like about "SuperGirl (and the CW in general) is how they weave social commentary into their shows. Sure they're about superheros but they're also about what's happening in the world today.
Anti alien sentiment is on the rise. The Earth First movement is gaining strength. Kara says she hasn't noticed any hate. J'Onn tells her to check her privilege. She looks like a sorority sister. That's probably why she doesnt see the bad stuff. Not everyone is that lucky.
We've know for some time President Mardsin is an alien. Those on the show did not. That is until now. Let's face it though. No matter how good she is, Mardsin "technically" cant be President due the current requirements. She wasnt born in the US (not to mention on planet Earth).
We're introduced to a few new characters. Nia Nal (played by Nicole Maines who also happens to be transgender) begins working at CatCo. She will later become Dreamer. We also see Agent Liberty in costume. More on him later. And in the finale scene, we see Kasnia has it's own SuperGirl. And you bet she's evil.
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). A good start to a new season. I continue to love the diverse cast and the shows handling of current social issues. I probably wont watch every episode of "SuperGirl" though since there are just too many for my liking (typically 20+ episodes). If ya cant say it in 10-13 episodes I lose interest and wander away.
