Wentworth Season 6 Review: STILL The Best TV Show You're Probably Not Watching

I'll be discussing season 6 of "Wentworth" below so HEAVY SPOILER ALERT. Turn back now if you havent watched it yet.

The number one question at the beginning of this season is what happened to the Freak? When we last saw her, she was buried in a wooden coffin some six feet under (thanks to Will). Given how many times she's cheated death previously I believe she's too evil to die...but more on Joan Ferguson later.

Returning are our regular prisoners: Allie, Franky, Liz, Boomer, Kaz, and Sonia. The same staff returns with Vera as Governor assisted by Jake (the Weasel) and Will. Officer Linda is still around and willing to take bribes for pretty much anything. New prisoners include: Ruby Mitchell, Marie Winters and Rita Connors.

Franky also escapes at the end of last season. The cops are close behind and shoot her. Despite almost dying, Bridget is able to help Franky pull through. They gather evidence and prove Franky's innocence in two murders. Franky is released from prison. She and Bridget join her father and little sister in the park. Given how most people go out on this show, Franky has one of the few happy endings.

One of the main stories this season involves Liz's eventual discovery that she has dementia. Celia Ireland does an excellent job of portraying the confusion and frustration of the condition. I really feel for her. This is going to be doubly hard on Liz as she tries to stay one step ahead of Psychopath Sonia (in order not to be killed). Sonia has her mind set on offing Liz after she testified against her in court. Liz poisoned her coffee at the end of last season but she's another one that's super hard to kill. Sonia retaliates in the shower by brutally stabbing to death someone with blond hair. Surprise, it's not Liz. It looks like Sonia might get out of prison due to her latest scheme. But she just cant help herself. She corners Liz on the roof. Luckily Kaz arrives and, after a struggle, pushes Sonia to her death.

On the romantic front, Allie has found a new love interest in Ruby.  Of course, love is never easy (especially in prison). We remember the heartbreak of what happened to Bea. It's about time Allie is able to enjoy herself a little. We eventually learn that Ruby has epilepsy and some sort of brain aneurysm that could kill her any second She also has a penchant for boxing and prison fight club. Those two definitely dont mix. Ruby was also at the bar when Marie's son Danny was killed. More drama. To make matters even more interesting, Marie and Allie were previously lovers (and its Marie that got her addicted to heroin and into prostitution). That woman is a piece of work.

And, lest us not forget, Ruby and Rita are actually sisters. Rita is secretly working undercover to bring Marie's criminal enterprise down (but the gig is becoming more and more dangerous).

Vera gets a little more to do this season as she deals with an unexpected pregnancy. Yes, Jake is the Baby Daddy.  Will descends into madness and uses drugs to try to get through the day. He sees/hears the Freak at every turn. Vera is being blackmailed and stalked by someone. Is it Joan? Nope, after a bunch of red herrings we finally learn who it is. Think previous Wentworth employees and you'll have the answer.

Eventually Will, Vera and Jake agree to go dig up the body to be sure the Freak is dead. They find Joan's corpse. Say it isnt so! The Freak was seriously the best thing about this series. Who is going to be the Big Bad now?

So here's where we are going into next season. Sadly, buzz on the street is "Wentworth" will end after season 7:

  • The Freak- Definitely dead (died buried alive in a coffin). Yes, I know some refuse to believe this. But remember what happened to Bea?
  • Sonia- Dead (pushed off a roof by Kaz).
  • Franky- Lives happily ever after with Bridget.
  • Vera- Preggo but doesnt want Jake to have anything to do with the baby. It looks like Vera, Will and Jake are going to get away with everything that transpired.
  • Rita- Abandoned by her fellow police officers, it looks like she's going to be in prison for a while. She beat Marie's henchwoman Drago to death in order to protect sis Ruby.
  • Marie- Still looking for her son's killer. She doesnt know that Drago already determined it to be Rudy. Marie isnt getting out of jail any time soon since the doctor she assaulted eventually died from his injuries.
  • Liz- Still in genpop but will have to be moved to a medical unit at some point. She has Drago's note that reads "Ruby is the killer" in her memory box (but has no knowledge of how she got it.
  • Jake- Still a jerk. Will Vera ever learn about his nefarious dealings with the Freak?
  • Will- Hopefully he'll have some peace now. However, he and Marie had sex several times so you can bet she'll be blackmailing him soon.
  • Kaz- Isnt going anywhere for a while after killing Sonia. Will she retain her top dog status? I dont think she has it in her.
  • Boomer- After initially being charged with attacking Cherry (due to Liz's failing memories), Boomer may soon get parole. Sonia's lawyer has been looking into her case. We also learn this season that Boomer suffers from fetal alcohol poisoning due to her mother drinking when pregnant with her.
  • Ruby and Allie- Not currently together but I'm sure that will change soon. Ruby better be careful or Allie may inadvertently rat her out to Marie. Surely, Allie wont have to deal with two dead girlfriends will she?

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). Despite the finale being a bit of a letdown, I still really enjoyed the season overall. I love Pamela Rabe. She is the best female villain to ever grace a TV show. I cant image "Wentworth" without her. Having said that, one of the things I enjoy most about "Wentworth" is this "Game Of Thrones" approach. Anyone can croak at any time. I also enjoyed the introduction of the three new characters (Rita, Marie, and Ruby) and look forward to seeing more of them next year.

  1. Vera had known about Jakes dealings with Ferguson for a while, she found out in season 5 when Ferguson told her.
