Bates Motel Season 4 Episode 5 Review: Mother Reveals Herself

In "Refraction" Dylan tries to land a job in Seattle so he can be with Emma. He doesnt have any real work experience so he tells his prospective employer he was REALLY good at marijuana distribution. Mistake? Probably.

Emma and Dylan share a tender scene. She is afraid of how her lung transplant scars look. He eases her anxiety by showing her his (complete with a tall-tale about a tiger shark attack). They are so cute together. I know everyone else on this show dies. Can we at least let these two have a happy ending?

In the biggest event of the episode, Dr Edwards sees Norman transition into Norma during a counseling session. Thank goodness Dr Edwards is no dummy and able to recognize the slight changes in voice and mannerisms. He asked Mother what she thinks of Norman. Her response is "I think he's a very weak, confused boy". No truer words have ever been said.

What a great scene! Freddie Highmore is brilliant. Mother is alternately seductive, dangerous, and vulnerable. I'm seriously worried for Dr Edwards' safety. It's also sad to see Norman genuinely try to get better (knowing what eventually happens). And who else guessed the reunion between Norma and Norman was all in his head? I suspected as much since there wasnt the usual high drama.

Chick weasels his way into Norma's house by pretending to be a craftsman who can fix her broken stained glass window (courtesy of Rebecca). What he actually wants is to find Caleb and kill him. He also reveals that he knows Caleb is Norma's brother and Dylan's daddy. Bad move dude!  Chick's going to meet a nasty end.

Norma asks her new husband if he killed Bob Paris. Romero of course did it to protect Based on Norma's reaction, it may make them closer. This is not the first murder for either.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). "Refraction" was a quieter episode but the reveal of Mother to Dr Edwards was wonderful. Run for your life Dr Edwards! And is it just me or are you hoping Chick dies a quick painful death? I'm just not feeling his character at all.
