Book Review: Like Me: Confessions Of A Heartland Country Singer by Chely Wright

Just finished reading "Like Me" by country singer Chely Wright. The book came out in 2010 and is available on Amazon (and a bunch of other places). I'm not a big country music fan, but after seeing an interview with her I was blow away by her honesty. That's a rare find these days (with most people doing anything for media attention). I was also interested to see how the country music industry works and how one gets to be a best selling artist.

The book opens with a then closeted Chely in a deep depression following a breakup. There are no lurid details. It's just a straightforward account of her life and struggles. The section where she has the gun in her mouth was extremely uncomfortable to read (and it should be). I wanted to reach through the page and say DON'T DO IT! Obviously we're SO happy that didn't happen.

I believe this is such an important book because it highlights the internal struggle of someone who obviously do not choose and would not have chosen to be gay. Anyone that says its a choice has no idea of the inner turmoil people go through to not be gay. And that world "lifestyle" cracks me up. There is no lifestyle! Unless you call getting up each day, going to work, and going home a lifestyle.

Also if you haven't already seen it, I would HIGHLY recommend the documentary 'Wish Me Away". It's available on Netflix (and a bunch of other places) and follows Chely's coming out process. Also see a speech she gave in Dallas in 2010 when accepting the Black Tie Dinner Media Award: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4FzHLWSgnas
