Extant Episodes 7 Thru 8 Recaps: Be On The Lookout For An Escaped Alien OffSpring

We finally get some answers in this week's two parter entitled "More In Heaven And Earth" and "Incursion". There are also two episodes next week. That leaves three more till the end of season 1.

Ethan is continuing to develop at a rapid rate. He learns Japanese in one day. John tries to slow down his development but cannot access his neural net. At first he blames Julie but she is innocent. It was Ethan himself that blocked John.

Ethan gets a bike and learns how to use it in two seconds flat. He rides to the park and sees two boys blowing up a service robot. He becomes very attached to the sweeper and wants John to fix him NOW. Ethan also questions his function (ie purpose in life). Julie tells him no one knows their function to start with but that he'll figure it out.

Odin Hates Bots!

We had suspected that Odin was a baddy all along and now it's confirmed. He is leading a meeting of the Ted-Kaczynski-We-Hate-Technology-Militia. Their current target is Ethan. Do NOT let this man babysit. Uh oh, too late. In another surprise, who arrives late to the meeting but Femi (Mr Yasumoto's main squeeze). Looks like she's playing both sides of the fence.

Why Am I So Stupid? Says Sparks To No One

Kern has a kidnapped Kryger in his basement. Kern's mom (JoBeth Williams) comes over and asks if he's using drugs again? He says no but he's lying. Apparently his father also hear voices and assumed it was God.  Kern switches sides and joins Kryger and Molly. That seems way to easy, didnt it? Kern lies and tells Sparks that he killed Kryger. Sparks tells him to kill Molly as well. This the exact opposite of what Mr Y told him to do. He said Molly should NOT be harmed until their sure the baby can live without her. Team MKK devise a plan to steal the "Offspring" (yes that is really what they're all calling it) when it is transported to another location.

Molly goes to visit another guy from the Aruna mission but he has mysteriously fallen to his death. Sparks goes to visit the Offspring who produces an image of his daughter Katie. We also learn that Sparks and his wife have split up due to Katie's death.

You're Here Because I Want To Put My Soul Into Your Robot Boy

Yasumoto reveals that he is dying and that's why he brought the blue energy to earth. I dont really understand that part. And doesnt this plot remind you of  Eldrich from "The Strain"? I'm dying so let's bring something to earth that will kill everyone on the planet.

Sparks shooting Molly gave me a shock for a few minutes. It couldnt be her though. Otherwise I wouldnt be watching this show. Nope, it was AlienKatie. I loved the camera work with Sparks' back to Katie as she pops up like some vampire.

I dont think the Offspring wants anyone's help. This week it killed Dr Red Shirt and stuffed him in the incubator. It also forced the swat team to shoot each other. Why does Molly insist on seeing her child? I'm sorry but if you were my offspring and you killed that many people, I'd forget that I knew ya.

Helpful Hint Of The Week:
  • If a room containing an alien life form mysteriously fills with fog, you should NOT go in it (especially if you're a Red Shirt).

Favorite Quotes:
  • "I'm sorry. It made me flush my mother into space. It ain't the baby Jesus!"- Kryger to Kern. Best line in the show so far!
  • "You shouldn't fret over Ethan rebelling over his programming. You wanted a kid and you got one."- Julie
  • "No risk, new reward"- Molly to John

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). Finally some answers. Five episodes to go till the end. Do you think "Extant" should get a season 2?
