"Survivorman's Secrets of Survival" has been airing on the Science channel since 9/6. It is a compilation of Les Stroud's previous shows. Each episode deals with one topic such as best methods for making a fire, purifying water, making a shelter, MacGyverisms, etc.
As always remember the rule of 3s-- 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food. Note: a lot of energy is expended when creating a shelter. Les' top 5 methods for making shelter are listed below with number 1 being the most desirable method:
5. No Shelter At All- It takes courage to sleep outside. Heat up the ground first and then lay on it. Clothing is always the first line of defense. Use grass for insulation.
4. Finding A Cave- Make sure nothing else lives in the cave. If you can heat up rocks they will retain their heat.
3. Bush Shelters- See if you can find a dry spot under a tree or bush. The first rule is never get wet.
2. Your Vehicle- In the winter, stay in your car if at all possible. It is water and wind proof.
1. Man Made Shelter- First raise the shelter off the ground. To make a spruce bough bed lay on the bed while making it since it will be much thinner when compressed. The roof should have a slope so after can run off. Birch bark can we used as shingles with logs to hold them down.
