Helix Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Dont Expect Any Quick Answers (Season Premiere)

To be completely honest I'm not sure what to think about the season premiere of "Helix". I knew they were doing a reboot but this is VERY different. I was hoping for a few answers to last season's cliffhangers but that doesnt appear to be happening any time soon. Oh well. "San Jose" definitely had a "Lost" vibe going on. I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. I'll need to see a few more episodes before making up my mind. Here's the major events as I saw them:

Do You Like It? I Made It Myself

Reset back to "day 1" (same as with episode 1 of the first season). Julia arrives on St Germaine Island. A guy in a homemade bio containment suit says "Do you know the way to San Jose?" and then whacks her in the head with a stick. She's carried through the woods to a cabin.

Yep These Are Grosser Than Black Oozy Goo

Next Peter and Sarah investigate a boat where 27 passengers are dead. They are joined by a scientist named Kyle Sommers. He seems fun. I assume he'll be a potential love interest for Sarah. Anyway, all the deadies have boils and yellow oozy stuff coming out of their mouths. It's definitely not the Narvick virus (since that ooze is black). This virus is dubbed TXM-7 (and is not airborne so some physical contact is required to contract it). Leila (the only survivor) says the boat was previously on St Germaine island. She also lets us know that the infected became violent and killed each other. Off the team and Leila go to the island. Of course it's an isolated area. The next boat wont arrive for two weeks. There's very spotty cell reception. The team is on their own. Hmmm that sounds familiar. Side note: this island is supposedly off the coast of Washington. How could it take 2 weeks to get there (unless you're planning on swimming)? But whatever. We need an isolated spot for the show.

As they trapse through the woods Leila thinks she seems a mysterious woman and runs off. They follow her. Sarah gets a stake to the foot. Kyle provides assistance. They discuss Alan. She hasnt seen him in over a year and doesnt care where he is. He tells his CDC coworkers nicknamed her "HotZone'. Not sure that's a compliment. Next they discover hundreds of human skulls in the woods. Uh oh. That's never a good sign.

Leila is again on the run. Get a rope and tie that woman to somebody. The team approaches a cabin. The scene is intercut with scenes of Julia in a cabin. We think its the same cabin.

Remember the rat we saw in the woods earlier? Now its in a jar in the cabin. Julia knocks it off a table. In a time lapse sequence we see it decompose. Just then Peter, Sarah and Kyle reach the cabin. It's empty. It appears Julia is in the same building but she's there 30 years AFTER everyone else. Psych! How did that happen?

Yep Still Silver

Scary Dude goes after Julia with tweezers. We think he's going to poke her in the eyeball but he's after her contact lenses. He removes them revealing the pale silvery irises of an Ilaria immortal. And of course even though it's 30 years later, she hasnt aged. He takes off his mask saying "I knew you would come one day".

Michael & The Sisters

Back in the other team's time period, the cabin is surrounded by hooded people with torches. Our folks are marched to a walled masion where three women greet them. I use the term "greet" loosely. The "sisters" are not very friendly. We later meet Brother Michael (who is the head of this cult). Oh yeah and Leila is dead (but no one really cares).

Im Sorry Head But Have We Met Before?

Julia tells Caleb that she is dying. Does this virus target immortals?  She asks Caleb if he knows Alan. He says yes but she wont be happy with what they find. Side note: The last time we saw Alan and Julia together, he was trying to blow her and the Ilaria Corporation's Paris office up. Julia and Caleb approach the same building that Team A was just in but now it's in ruins. She sees a tombstone with Alan's name on it. Is that our Alan? Apparently because back in the current time frame, a hooded figure brings food to Sarah. It's our Alan. Meanwhile the sisters we met earlier are in the basement pulling teeth and stuffing yellow goo down some one's throat. The poor victim looks over and sees jar after jar on the shelf. And end scene.

At Least It's Warmer This Year

In conclusion, I have no idea where this is going but it is kinda fun. We have two different time lines. All the current main characters (who I'm referring to as "Team A" are in the present, while Julia is on the same island but 30 years later. However it seems that everyone is trying to do the same thing (find a cure for the new pandemic). Has Julia gone rogue on Ilaria? Does the virus affect immortals too or was it created specifically to target immortals?

Julia still have her silver but we dont see them on Sarah. When Sarah was impaled on the stick, I thought she would heal in like 5 seconds (but she didnt). Also where is Sarah's baby? Did she give birth? And where is Hatake? Did he survive the Arctic Biosystems explosion? How did Pete miraculously recover from being a Vector? What happened to everyone else on the show? Is Caleb Sarah and Alan's love child? So many questions and no answers so far.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "I'm from Texas. We dont go to the bathroom without a gun."-Kyle to Sarah.
  • Julia: "Take me to Alan." Caleb: "OK but you wont like what you see".

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Not sure how I'm feeling about the show so far since its VERY different. I'll give it a few more episodes. There are definitely many new mysteries. But the smackdown I was hoping for between Ilaria/Julia and Alan & company wont be happening any time soon (if at all).
